Cubs just signed Drew Smyly. Likely as a 6th man for second half since he's going to be out for at least the first half after surgery.

Marlins traded away Ozuna with the idea of keeping Yelich as their building block.

Yelich isn't exactly happy with the way things have been going in Fish land and they're reportedly listening to offers.

What better than a WORLD SERIES GAME 7 winner who wants to be traded?

Montgomery for Yelich, get it going. (Obviously joking)

Would be nice to have a defensive outfield of Harper, Yelich, and Heyward, though.

Man I wish I was Theo. Here's my gameplan.

Sign W. Davis & Cobb.& bring Duensing back

Tell the Yanks, want Schwarber we'll need Torres back.
Russell for Archer.
Give Caratini a shot as #2 Catcher can always find a fill in later if needed

Free up a spot for Happ in the OF
Zobrist plays 2nd thru his contract or until Torres is ready

All in on Harper next winter
Tell Montgomery he's or 6th starter but his value is as a swingman

Rotation: Lester, Hendricks, Quintana, Chatwood, Archer
w/ Smiley & our 2017 first rounders as future hopefuls

Pen: Davis, Morrow, Edwards, Strop, Grimm (still has options)
Montgomery, Duensing, Wilson

lineup: Contreras, Rizzo, LaStella (2017 leadoff) & Zobrist until Torres is ready, Bryant, Baez
OF Happ, Almora & Hayward add Harper in 18 deal Hayward if possible

Not all front offices are as bad at their jobs as Jeter & co. You're not getting Torres for Schwarber or Archer for Russell

Can someone explain the Marlins fire sale? They are practically giving players away. I understand the Stanton trade with the huge contract but scratching my head over Marcell Ozuna. Also heard they want to trade Christian Yelich who is only 25.

No.
Bring Duensing back, sure.
LaStella as the everyday leadoff guy, no.
Zobrist every day, probably not. He's getting pretty old. He likely fits best as the utility guy that fills in a lot of days, but not everyday. Get him some rest to keep him fresh.

The Harper thing, sure. That's a given.

I haven't seen much talk about backup catcher. I cant imagine they want to use Caratini as the backup as his playing time and development would be drastically cut in that role. Im assuming Avila is going back to Detriot with his family connections there. I would be 100% fine with Rivera coming back next year to backup.

Two solid bullpen signings and would love to find a way to bring Davis back either on a 1 year prove it deal like Fowler kind of did or more economical 3 year deal as the closer market is starting to cool so Cubs may be still be able to get him at a reasonable price.

Still need another SP for sure and wishful thinking is they find a deal somewhere for someone to fill the leadoff spot but I think that will just be icing if they can do something with that. Pitching is the biggest need still and so far they are filling those spots pretty well.

Davis isn't coming back on a 1 year deal. It'll probably take 4 years and $45-50 mil to sign him. Sure, most contenders are set at closer, but he'll be able to play the Cubs and Cards off against each other at a minimum.

Jesse Rogers came out saying Russell and a few prospects for Machado. I don't want it but it was fun hearing what he said.

I would throw Russell and a few prospects on the table for Yelich. Doubt the Cubs are even involved but I would give my left nut for him.

Also, some Japanese media group is reporting Cubs are in on Darvish. Doubt it happens but would be interesting. Would prefer we get one more reliever and get the best bullpen in the league.

Darvish news is picking up some heavy steam. Not sure how I feel about it. Hes a great pitcher, but has been horrible when the pressure mounts in the post season.

He sure was terrible against us in the NLCS. If that's the pitcher we're getting, sign me up yesterday.

I'd take Darvish in a heartbeat if the amount of years isn't too long.

At least in World Series, Darvish was tipping his pitches to the Astros.

I get why you say that because of this past WS, but it isn't necessarily the truth. Yes he got shelled by the Astros twice this year, but a lot that has come out of that is that he was tipping his pitches (been acknowledged by Astros' players) and that is a correctable problem. Prior to the WS he had made 4 career postseason starts with a 2.74 ERA over 23 innings with 25 Ks and only 2 BB including dominating the Cubs in the NLCS. There is enough of a track record there to assume that he will continue to be an elite level pitcher even in the postseason as long as some of the pitch tipping issues are corrected (which they easily should be).

Market doesn't seem very robust for Yu currently, so if the Cubs can sneak in a 4yr/$100M or even a 5yr/$120M deal, then I thnk they need to jump on that opportunity

I'm hoping the market kind of fell out on Darvish and we can get him at a decent price.

Also, for some reason I'm still really high on Russell. I'd give him one more year to see if the bat comes around before considering unloading him. I'd much rather part with Schwarber.
