Really lucky we didn't go 0-3 this weekend. We're going to get pushed around by bigger more physical teams in the big 12. Tre might be the biggest disappointment, he looks lost at both ends.
Yep, wonder if his injury is lingering worse than we know. He was absolutely expected to be a candidate for a “13 & 8” type of season. Hope he can get there, love his game.

Our offense has been painful to watch in Orlando. But my bet is TJ will be more focused on the defense.

A&M scored 59 points in 23 minutes tonight. We got beat to most loose balls and 50/50 boards in the 2nd half.

On offense 56percent of our shots (34 of 61) were 3 point attempts. Based on our jump shooting so far this season, probably not a winning formula to take so many 3's. I mentioned it yesterday in a post, but we need to be willing to take mid-range jumpers vs. driving into a crowd or defaulting to guys standing on the 3 pt line.
Seemed like the defensive rotations got a bit slower after VCU and VT started hitting silly shots late in the shot clock.

Didn’t seem like the intense play, 3 min line switches were there. Down Ward so that makes a bit of sense, but also seemed that the rotations got a bit tighter with longer stretches of mins played.

^ all anecdotal m, I haven’t looked/reviewed stats.

Gut take when viewing is that it didn’t seem the team imposed their will/intensity and got into shooting matches.

Correct. We aren’t any younger or newer than we’ve been previously, and many, many teams are structured this way due to the Portal these days.

21-22 was pretty old too. Lots of juniors and Brockington was a senior...was he a Covid senior?

I'm not sure what to think moving forward. I think this team is a way better shooting team than we saw this weekend. And even though they were missing all of them, MM, Curtis Jones, and Pav all got very good looks on many of their missed shots. But at some point, what you see is what you get and you do have to start wondering if there's a bigger root cause to the issue.

One disappointment to me in these games is how small Watson's role became. I understand that Pav played well at times and theoretically provides a lot more offense. But if the offense isn't working regardless, I feel like Watson's defense, hustle, and rebounding are more useful, especially with Ward out.

The increase in turnovers is maybe the most concerning thing to me. Coming into the year and after the first few games, I felt very good about the improvements in that department (I thought all three guard transfers were significant upgrades in playmaking and ball handling than those they replaced). But 3 of the last 4 games have had turnover rates at or higher than last season's average (Grambling State - 21%, VT - 19%, A&M - 22%). I'm not quite sure what the answer is, but making open shots to punish a defense for being overly aggressive would certainly help.

We have 1 contributor who didn’t play CBB last year…

Lipsey isn’t young anymore.
Tre, BRE, Gilbert, CJ, etc. - none of them are young.

If you want to use “new-ness/youth” as an excuse/explanation, that’s on you. My personal (and meaningless) opinion is - I don’t see a youthful/new team, I see a team that’s making the same mistakes as past TJ teams made during their mid-season lull.

So if someone plays one year of CBB it is the same as someone who has already played 3 or 4 years? Guess if we ignore math then yes this team is just as experienced as last years.

I’ve had to listen on the radio for the most the games this year. Whenever Gilbert or K. Jones shoots the ball I just assume it’ll miss at this point. Really disappointed in the transfers.

He heard the commentator say that Lipsey isn't young since he started as a freshman.

It's a long season, college bb is, and it's only November.
Not trying to convince anyone else of this -- just myself.

I miss when ISU was known for shooters, instead of....well, the opposite.

TJ really needs to go find another Matt Thomas.

Over half of our roster (and majority of our key contributors) have 1 to 4 years of college experience. Simply, it’s just not a young team.

Which is fair. He played so many minutes last year as a frosh, and was great. Also has 2 full “TJ offseasons” under his belt.

Do you watch the games? Biliew is very athletic, but doesn't look strong or on offense look for his shot. His game looks a lot like Watson's did last year,

I think expectation have to change. Maybe he can be a 20mpg guy in February, but I feel like his offense is couple year project.
That's kind of my point. If the talent is there but he is a "project," then he needs the minutes and consistent playing time to figure it out. If CJ was lighting the gym on fire, I'd get it. But he's clearly not. I'd rather see us invest those minutes into a project that will pay dividends later rather than a guy who can't hit water out of a boat right now and who has a much lower ceiling than Omaha.

It's not about the shots we are MISSING, it's about the shots we are TAKING! You don't make FORCED shots and you don't make shots without confidence behind them. We missed a lot of layups also, or turned it over in the lane before they became shots. It would be great to get transition points every possession...... but not realistic.
Gilbert needs to get some control, I understand what he is TRYING to do, but it just turns into desperation. I think Jones will make the 3's when we can make the passes and they are not forced. Tre King was double teamed all night, and we would still try to throw it into him?
Omaha is lacking confidence, concentrating too much on where he should be, with no natural flow. This takes a minute when you jump up a level. The day he steps on the court with confidence he will contribute......I think that day will come.
In the mean time we have to learn to run an offense when the transition points done come!
