Buckley's foul was extremely costly and was a very poor decision.

To me there is hustle mistakes and just plain bonehead mistakes. I'll accept hustle mistakes.

I think he was talking about before the first half ended, when we were trying to foul on purpose because we had fouls to give.

I disagree with your disagree. We had fouls to give. Buckley should have fouled the shooter again, before he had a chance to square up for the shot. That would have given them the ball again, in the same spot, with about a second left. At that point, it would have been next to impossible to get a good shot off. Bad execution at the end of the halves has been quite costly this season...

Valid point...I would agree on hacking the second attempt. Although being able to do that without fouling him in the act of shooting are slim.

Had they had more time I would agree with the foul em logic...except tough D there and they lose time and are forced in to a tough. I hate the idea of giving the team out of bounds. Why...

Teams practice those situations (out of bounds plays) and they are probably the best thing you execute. Much rather have a player trying to react to the unknown of how he'll get the shot off (thinking) and lower his chances at getting a clean look.

I was talking about the play at end of first half. (and I'll level my criticism towards Greg too).

Yes, getting beat was bad but he got beat because he stopped moving his feet in order to reach/foul.

I can respect the strategy but not agree with it. I just despise giving a team a chance to set up a play...defense has the advantage when an offense is having to create vs executing a set play.

The end of the first UNI-Bradley game was a similar situation. UNI was up 2 with 10 seconds left and had 3 fouls to give. They gave the first one up quickly, then Jake had them wait to commit another foul when they started their drive.

By the time the foul was committed, there was one second left on the clock. Bradley was forced to try to throw a lob at the rim from near half court.

So if executed correctly, it is a great strategy. That may be the problem here though.

True, I'll agree it wasn't executed correctly.

To me the foul should only occur is Buck is beat...your first priority is tough D and slowing him down...if you foul him in the course of slowing him down...maybe okay.

But I think he gave up too early on D in order to foul.

I guess to me it comes back to not giving a team time to set up an out of bounds play...unless like you said they'll have a second or two then at that point the shot becomes hurried by necessity.

Does it really matter? We might as well be last.

We are not a good basketball team. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble. We tried mightily to throw this game away at the end, but just couldn't manage to do it this time.

We consistently make the dumbest basketball plays I've seen in a long time. It just drives me insane watching how fundamentally bad this team is. And I thought that was what GMac was going to bring to this team?

Oh well. It's a win. I should be happy. But I'm not. Sorry. I just can't get excited about this win at all. Call me a hater if you will. Facts are tough to take.

Is that why you can't just take the facts instead of throwing your "knowledgable opinion" out there?

I think the team has talent, but I could coach the team to 3 conference victories.

So, I hate to do this, I really do, but I'm going to quote myself from the thread regarding ten-minute conversations with McD....

No, shut the **** up, you couldn't

Sorry, but I have a problem with a lot contained within this post. How does he know more about his draft stock than anyone else? Why should he be worrying about that to the point it's consuming him?

IMO, that's been the root of a great majority of his struggles this year, and it comes from self-doubt ("beating himself up").

An athlete of his caliber, and (his athletic caliber) has the potential to be great, has to KNOW he's great. Has to be cocky, arrogant, etc. Look at past Cyclone greats. Name one that wasn't cocky/arrogant when it came to their ability on the court. I beg you, and bet you can't name one. The only above average player I can think of who doubted himself was Stevie Johnson, and he doubted himself until Tinsley came to town. Cockiness oozed out of JT, and it's contagious.

To wrap this up, Craig played "cocky" the last 5 minutes of this game and played as well in those 5 minutes as I have seen of him since last year. He has to stop thinking and just play...with attitude.

**** "draft stock".
Jeff Hornecek:yes: And Jeff actually had a long, successful NBA career as opposed to a lot of our cocky Cyclone "greats" who didn't have an NBA career at all.

I'll guarentee... he was cocky/confident. He knew that if he worked hard, how good he could be. All athletes have to have this to some extent.

Great grind it out win. Im proud of Craig for stepping up big time. Is there anywhere with a highlight of that amazing one handed ally hoop by Craig?

Fred Hoiberg anyone? was too little to remember if he was cocky or not...
Pretty good run with the T-Wolves, good spark off the bench, clutch when we needed 3's... but those were the days when we were good, KG, Cassel, Spreewell.....

Jeff Hornecek was a friggin' walk-on who turned into an Iowa State legend, and as you mention a potential NBA hall-of-famer. He was as cocky as anybody ON THE COURT. He knew he was better than the other guy, and proved it every day. Not an ounce of self-doubt in that man.

See the response from Clonegrad07 concerning Horney. Same applies to Freddy.

Props to Coach Mac and the guys tonight. Played hard through some tough stretches. Brackins took control towards the end of the game like we have been waiting for him to do all season. He completely controlled the last 8 minutes of the game.

A good and much needed win.

It is valid to disagree with the strategy, but the thing that is typical of this year is that I watched GMAC look Buck in the eye and hack at his arm and tell him to foul again. Buck had three legit chances to foul well before the shot went off and he did not foul. There is a reason that Buck did not play in the second half!

BTW, the strategy works if he does what his coach told him. He did not do what he was asked and despite the short bench he sat the rest of the game. Maybe we are seeing a new GMAC!
