The deadline to get an extension done passed almost an hour ago. Unless news breaks late it looks like he'll play out the last year of his rookie deal.
I understand from the Chiefs' perspective why they didn't pay him yet because Mahomes' contract situation is going to get crazy here quickly and we already have other very highly paid guys. But at the same time we actually have cap space right now (finally getting out from the hell hole John Dorsey put us in) so why not pay him and front load it for this year?

Yeah, there's pros and cons to doing a long term deal. Personally, if I'm convinced a player is worth the money I'd be inclined to get a deal done sooner than later because it's only going to get more expensive if the player continues to perform well. But KC is in a unique spot because they just shelled out huge money to Frank Clark. I don't know that it's wise to invest that much cap space at one position. Let Jones play out his rookie deal, use the franchise tag on him after the season, and see how things go from there.

Huge money for Clark and Mathieu. Plus Mahomes needs paid eventually. Tyreek Hill may need paid once that whole deal gets sorted out. Kelce is paid well. Both OTs are paid well. Watkins is on a high salary. I'm surprise KC even has money available honestly.

And if you look at Jones' numbers, there's a case to be made for waiting to see if he can even repeat his 2018 performance. His first two years he didn't do much. So was last year just a fluke or a sign of things to come?

I wonder if they are taking the same approach with Jones that they did with Dee Ford. Ford was almost a bust then he was better last year but in a contract year. Maybe they think Jones was meh before last year and it was kind of like a contract year so they let him play again next year and if he is good but not great trade him away.

I could also see them waiting on paying Jones because of the switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Will he be as good? If no, trade him to a team that runs a 3-4.

Sure. And he might just not be part of their future plans at all no matter how well he plays. Not only are there the players you mentioned who have big contracts coming up, but KC already shelled out big bucks for another DE. If Jones was to get a deal better or comparable to Frank Clark's the Chiefs would have upwards of 20% of their cap space tied up in two guys who play the same position. Not the worst problem to have if those guys are elite, but it creates issues at other spots on the team. They're always going to keep Mahomes surrounded with plenty of weapons as long as Andy Reid is there, so that means that a critical position like the LB group or secondary is going to get shortchanged.

I wouldn't blame him if he did hold out. Looking at who the Cowboys have to pay over the next couple years I think they have every intention of squeezing every last bit of value out of his rookie contract and then cutting him loose after five or six seasons of using him as the workhorse back. He knows how critical he is to the success of that offense, and so does their front office. Might as well get paid now.

Agreed. I was listening to a Cowboys beat reporter today talk about how the Dallas offense is absolutely tied to Zeke. He is not likely going to have this kind of leverage again, and as a running back in this day and age, you have to maximize every opportunity you get.

My wife is a pediatric nurse. She says that spiral fractures in kids that young, 99% of the time are inflicted by someone. Its very rare that they just spiral fractured a bone by accident. It’s clear in tapes from Hill that he broke his kids arm. The NFL has dropped the ball once again. It’s sickening this piece of **** gets no suspension. I hope that piece of **** gets hit so hard his brain comes loose. He’s a woman beater and a child beater. ******* sickening.

Very strange how Hill didn't get at least some kind of suspension out of this. Makes the Chiefs pick of WR Mecole Hardman look like a bit of a reach now. Hope he turns out to be more than a kick returner because the Chiefs had a lot more pressing needs in the secondary they could have drafted in the 2nd round.
