A significant portion of that talent is walking out the door. Campbell needs bodies.
I hate to say it, but if Campbell is needed bodies from ISU, then his talent level is going to drop big time next season. I doubt we would have 5 to 7 players getting much playing time on that team with all the players. leaving. Players leave the Penn States of the world for two reasons, lack of playing time or the opportunity to get make more money. If they are currently playing, and getting decent NIL, they are not leaving to go down just because of a coaching change.

I would venture to guess it is more about him trying to bring his guys to instill his culture, than simply fill the roster. They will no doubt be recruited over long term.
I totally agree what your saying. However, it's easier being the culture guy when you're the starter at ISU, instead of the bench warmer at Penn State.

That’s his problem now.

Don't disagree, but I'm sure all of his players would like to follow him. Since he's has his "pick of the litter" he's just take the best ones.
So be it. The players will be making decisions they feel are in their own best interest. There will be some very good players that will transfer, even (shockingly) to schools other than Penn St.

All we can do as fans is support the players who will be playing next year. But it seems by your other comment you are still angry at Campbell for leaving. Understandably. But don’t be angry at young adults making a very difficult decision that doesn’t align with what you want them to do

I'll be curious how many people's minds change on Matt once he's done raiding all of ISU best players.
Matt was a great coach for Iowa State and ran a first class program. Did a great job developing his players as athletes and more importantly young men!

Fans need to face reality in modern college sport. Players in football and men's hoops are professional athletes from a pay and time commitment perspective. So to expect players to have an unequivocal loyalty to Iowa State is unrealistic.

No different than how most ISU grads view their job/employer relationship.

I don't like it either, but have to live, have expectations based on reality.

Like we didn’t know he was going to do that when he left. He did the same to Toledo when he left there.
That decidedly did NOT happen when Matt came from Toledo. Now that was a different day and age in college football but he did not come from Toledo with a bunch of transfers and high school flips in tow.

Portal giveth and taketh. We've been spoiled by the lack of roster turnover in recent years.

I have faith CJR will get us the best roster possible come next fall! He made a bowl game while replacing 75% of the roster, on a budget 1/5 of that he has now! Not to mention the upgrade in conference, facilities, and access to talent, with Pullman being so isolated.

It's tough, but this is going to be the new normal. Every player is a free agent and $1B++ of cash is floating around P4 schools to reward the best and brightest!

IMO in the future it's going to be tough for ISU to keep its best players 4 years. ISU has <$15M to spend on its roster, while others in the P4 have $30M+.

I don't like losing guys like Becht, Brahmer, Bacon, etc. But it's just like they graduated, so next guy up and guys like Moberly, Manske, Burkle, Ebel, Brezina, etc have to step up.
So what you're saying is:

There's Ohio State and Oregon, then there's Wake Forest and Syracuse, then there's fifty feet of crap, and then there's Iowa State? And then people wonder why it's hard to be romantic about college football.

So tell me why should anyone have a loyalty to any "university" team then?

But Penn State is in that top 25% of talented teams, I am not talking about the EIU's of the world, that have to bring them in and develop them, teams like PSU are bringing in a dozen four star players a year. This has nothing to do with Iowa and their recruiting but of how many ISU players can play at Penn State?
This year now that the kids are developed I'd say ther's a strong 8-9-10 kids. To your point kids like Caleb Bacon would not have had a chance at PSU out of High School. He would develop into it in a couple years, then potentially go there via transfer portal? But agree PSU is recruiting a different type of kid than ISU.

Our highest rated recruit from that season was a previous Toledo recruit.

Know the name Eyioma Uwazurike? Guess where he was committed before he switched?

And then there is Jatairis Grant.

And then of course, there were a couple of recruits that were committed to Toledo that we offered and they decided to not come to Iowa State.

I still love the cyclones but have to admit that all the money and players switching teams so easily stuff has made it not quite as fun for me.
College sports has always been root for the colors. Your all-time greats in school history are really great or 2 or 3 years. Maybe 4 in those rare cases. Most players you root for for a couple years and their gone.

I think fans are upset that players aren't as tied to your favorite team as you'd like them to be. It's just the way it is. And it's always been like this; players are more tied to their team and coaches and less to the school.

So we had three high school guys. How is that similar to how things work today with the portal?

And now we're getting down to exactly why college football fans are feeling so disenchanted with the sport.
Disenchanted with the Sport but I am still a Loyal Son Forever True:

As loyal as I have been since my first Game in 1978 @ Hall of Fame Classic.

As loyal as I have been since sitting through the awful 0-10-1 season in 1994.

As loyal as I have been since sitting through the Campbell Renaissance.

As loyal as I will continue to be as long as I am alive and Iowa State is fielding a football team: Good, Bad or Ugly!
