Cade Cowell and Henry Kessler have been added to the US squad as injury replacements for the knockout rounds of the Gold Cup.

The US will play Jamaica on Sunday in their quarterfinal match with Qatar and El Salvador facing off in the other match on the US side of the bracket.

Is the roster makeup due to World Cup qualifying coming up? Looking back at the 2019 Gold Cup Roster, we had many of the big name on the roster. Are we just trotting out the "B" Team this time around because of qualifying?

I was curious on this as well. And yes, our "B" team definitely looked like a "B" team vs Canada. If we trot out that same roster for the rest of the Gold Cup, I fear there is a decent chance we have a relatively quick exit.

European clubs have started their preseason already so I think Berhalter wanted to give those guys a break after the Nations League final and then let them settle in with their clubs for a full preseason.

I honestly have no problem with that strategy. The European guys have basically been playing non-stop since the resumption of their 2019-2020 seasons after the COVID suspension at the beginning of 2020. Also, even our top talents are not 100% locked in starting 11 players at their clubs because many of them are at huge clubs with serious squad depth. Pulisic, McKennie, Reyna, and Adams all get fairly regular run in their clubs, but they don’t start every game. Also keep in mind McKennie, Reyna, and Adams all have new managers coming in at their clubs so them getting a full preseason will help them set up their spots with their teams for the upcoming season

Seems like that is how it goes for the Gold Cup, in years where there isn’t a run up to the WC we play a mostly A Team with a bit of B and Cers thrown in. In years where the long trudge to the WC is coming up then we get this team, which I would almost call a “C” team.

Typically the year after the world cup is when the US and Mexico put their "A" teams into the Gold Cup. Berhalter also talked about the US qualifying schedule which has multiple back-to-back-to-back matches this fall and winter where they are going to need these players.

USA WORLD CUP FIXTURES
Sept. 2: El Salvador (a)
Sept. 5: Canada (h)
Sept. 8: Honduras (a)
Oct. 7: Jamaica (h)
Oct. 10: Panama (a)
Oct. 13: Costa Rica (h)
Nov. TBD: Mexico (h)
Nov. TBD: Jamaica (a)
Jan. 27: El Salvador (h)
Jan. 30: Canada (a)
Feb. 2: Honduras (h)
March 24: Mexico (a)
March 27: Panama (h)
March 30: Costa Rica (a)

@ Whoever Knows the Answer(s)!

Which is more important: Nations League or Gold Cup? Does Gold Cup still determine who goes to the Confederations Cup? Is there even going to be a Confederations Cup before Qatar 2022?

Hup U.S.A.!

There’s no Confed Cup anymore so the Gold Cup doesn’t have the added bonus of that qualification. The Gold Cup is always only going to matter as much as teams prioritize it by sending their best squad. I’d argue that the teams involved in the Nations League semis/final sent their A squad there and not to the Gold Cup. So I’d say the Nations League is more important.

I think it changes depending on the situation. This year for the U.S. the nations league mattered more. With World Cup Qualifying later this year, Berhalter wanted to give the A team players a rest so they weren’t selected for the Gold Cup thus it not being as important as the Nations League this year. But in two years when there isn’t World Cup Qualifying the Gold Cup will probably be more important.

I get what your trying to say when you say it was "a gritty win", because we won, but I don't think we played all that gritty. I know Jamaica is a really physical team but I think we play to "nice". We needed to get after them more. Be it getting physical or even fouling more. It was a bit better in the second half and we got the win, but we definitely need these guys to play tougher if we're going to keep winning in this tourney.

Otherwise, it's a good win for the team. I guess I expected them to make the semi's, but definitely thought we might lose to Jamaica. Now lets see if we can get past the guest nation, the Asian champion, Qatar. Making the final would be great for this team.
