I know in the mid-90s after the Walden years, the first time we won a football game (and happened a few times afterwards), the students tore down the goal posts and dumped them in Lake Laverne

clearly they cancelled football for the next decade since we still have yet to recover to our winning ways...

There's nothing wrong with VEISHEA being an excuse to get drunk. The problem is that people associate VEISHEA with rioting and at this point it is self fufilling. People aren't getting any more drunk on VEISHEA than they are for a home football game. Especially not on a Tuesday night. But they are wanting to riot because it is VEISHEA.
I'd argue they're drinking more. How many times have you heard about some moron falling off a balcony to their death or breaking just about every bone in their body? I can think of twice in the past 3 or 4 years on one specific weekend of the year each of those years. No other problems otherwise...

Cancelling it just isn't about the riot. The riot is the straw that broke the camel's back. It's cancelled because too frequently there's some PR disaster Iowa State has to clean up because an idiot fell from a balcony during VEISHEA.

Riot + vandalism + students hurt/killed too frequently = cancelled VEISHEA. The formula really isn't too difficult.

Look at how this thread started.
VEISHEA is associated with riots even if they don't happen most years. A small percentage of people keep being huge idiots.

VEISHEA is tainted and sadly it is time to kill it.

Yes. This. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. That's what you get for people being idiots. I drank an obscene amount during VEISHEA and not once did I say "Hey, maybe if we raised a bunch of hell and wrecked a bunch of **** this would be more fun."

Cancelling VEISHEA only cancels the good parts about VEISHEA. The booze, drinking, and parties are still going to happen regardless if there is VEISHEA or not.

It's not about whether they saw it. But let's say they cancel it for the next 3-4 years. How much will seniors in 2018 be able to tell freshmen about VEISHEA, when they've never be able to be a part of it before?

It's no different than high school sports when you have a group of bad attitudes. Got a ****** senior class, and it tends to filter down the ranks and repeats itself year after year. You have to find a way to break the cycle, and a 1-year hiatus ain't gonna do it.
This strategy is highly ineffective with 35,000 people. Do think everyone knows everyone?

For this year, without a doubt. Our group of ~10 are still coming up to get our party on.

(Promise we won't destroy anything other than our dignity)

No, everyone doesn't know everyone in a group of 35k. But the fewer people who know anything about what VEISHEA has become, the less trouble the event will be when its reinstated.

Agree 100%. What are the students and their guests going to do now with all that idle time on their hands? Hmmmm

I'm going to guess that the people who would have gone totally nuts (because f'n VEISHEA) will either continue as planned or tone it down, so as to avoid getting arrested (because it's a pretty safe bet that the cops won't be putting up with any ******** for the rest of the week). The people who are bummed about the REAL VEISHEA events being cancelled are not likely to go nuts and make the situation even worse (and put the future of VEISHEA into very real doubt), since they apparently actually care about the event for what it's supposed to be.

I'll be shocked if the activity for the rest of the week even comes close to approaching last night.

I just went through campus town at lunch. It isn't that bad. To have a fund to help the cleanup makes it seem like war or a natural disaster happened. People are blowing what happened last night way out of proportion.

They've been out power-washing since before dawn. You missed most of it. Also, I'd guess that the light poles and such are what are going to need a fair amount of funds thrown at them.
