3. Cancelling VEISHEA will do nothing. 1) The students will riot because of VEISHEA being cancelled and 2) the future years students know when VEISHEA should be and will still consider it an unofficial party weekend.
Were there riots when they cancelled VEISHEA 10 years ago or whenever?

Just hearing about this and read the entire thread, so my take:

1. Maybe the cops should stop breaking up house parties and pushing the party goers to Welch. You think they would have learned from the last riot. Sometime you have to pick your poison and wiegh house party vs. riot.

2. I find it funny when people say "I am so embarrassed by this". Seriously? I am a proud ISU grad and alum that still lives in Ames, but I don't feel this affects my life to the extent of being embarrassed by it.

3. Cancelling VEISHEA will do nothing. 1) The students will riot because of VEISHEA being cancelled and 2) the future years students know when VEISHEA should be and will still consider it an unofficial party weekend.

Canceling it is exactly what will happen, it will drastically decrease the party, many less people will come to Ames for an unofficial party, than an official party. Less people equals less problems like this.

I agree with point 1 and 2. I wouldn't really say I'm embarrassed. Their is jack holes at every college. This does put our college in a bad light.

Point 3 is where I disagree. While canceling VEISHEA may cause an additional riots, police would be ready for it and have a plan and could put a stop to future riots. Canceling VEISHEA would cut down on the numbers tremendously.

As much as people like to say that cancelling VEISHEA would only hurt those in the majority that participate in on-campus activities and is extreme for a few hundred idiots rioting.... well, welcome to life and the real world. Fact is, it's usually a few in the minority that ruin great things for everybody else, but sometimes that's the right outcome, especially when the University's reputation is on the line.

Sure, VEISHEA is great for on-campus activities, but clearly it isn't going to work. If this is the kind of **** people do on a Tuesday night, I would be shocked if the rest of the week wasn't cancelled, or at least everything but the very bare essentials. My guess is that there will be an announcement by end of day with some pretty hard-nosed repercussions, and rightfully so.

I know most won't agree - but I'd set an example. I'd expel anybody proven to have destroyed property, I'd cancel the rest of the week's activities, I'd put in a curfew for campustown through the rest of the week with zero-tolerance arrests, and then I'd reevaluate future years.

Two concerns - pray that kid hasn't passed away as has been rumored, and pray that the MBB team was smart enough to stay away.

feel like this needs some more details

It's all from one of the employees, but here is what I got.

Guy, drunk off his McCaffery, comes into Jimmy Johns with a toaster and a loaf of bread. He's bragging about stealing both of them from a house party he was at. He wants them to give him the makings of a sandwich, but he doesn't need their bread, he stole his own. They wont give him the fixings, but they will sell him a sandwich and let him tear it apart if he wanted. He demanded to speak to a manager about the not-selling-him-handfulls-of-meat shenanigans, and the employee lied and said he was the manager. The drunk guy acquiesced and bought a sandwich.

He then plugged in the toaster in the little hallway of seats there, stuffed the toaster full of bread, and started it. When the over-stuffed toaster couldn't stop toasting because it was overstuffed, it started to smoke a little. He got scared, stood up, and walked out, leaving a smoking toaster in the back. He said that the toaster lit on fire, but there was no real damage.

Again, this is just what I heard from a guy who was working there at the time.

This and this. Cancelling the event absolutely does accomplish something, and it's the right move.

I couldn't DISAGREE with you more.

1 - Cops aren't to blame, the idiots that rioted are to blame. PERIOD This is the same type of stupid victim-mentality that has taken over our youth and creates a lot of these riots. (man I feel old, and I'm only 31)

2 - How can you not be embarrassed by making national news AGAIN for rioting. Do you not sit and think how stupid the kids must be at Arizona, Kentucky, UCONN, etc that have rioted over the past month?

3 - Nonsense. You cancel VEISHEA and impose a no-exception curfew and things will be just fine. College kids party every weekend so they aren't going to start an underground VEISHEA movement in the future just because. If you take it away, there will be a fraction of the people partying.

What's been reported:
2 -people arrested
2 -cars flipped
1 -serious injury reported
2-street lights down
numerous signs missing

Seems small for national attention

Tuesdays are notoriously slow news days.

I've heard the rumors, but I'm hoping they were smart enough to stay clear in the back and not DO anything. Even for being there, if I'm FH, I suspend them for a game or two next season to send a message.

Well we know Leath can't make a decision that quick so I would say that is wrong.

I'm pretty sure he'll act fast and hard. He understands how big reputation is to a University and I'm pretty sure he's going to drop the hammer quickly and forcefully. And I'll be supporting him.

My three-year-old said this when we explained things to her in a subdued manner: "If the police ever tell me to go home, I'll call my mama to come get me and the police will tell me I did a good job."

Why is a preschooler so much smarter than several hundred students?

It's just a shame that a small handful are jacking this up for thousands of other students, alumni, and families.
