That is how the world works my friend. Your remarks are the same ones I remember people making 10 years ago and 10 years before that when there were riots. I'm pretty sure it's Game Over.

And ten years ago and ten years before that, Veisehea was cancelled, and then it came back.

You don't kill tradition. It may be a 5 year cancellation, but it's not over.

And then we just get back to VEISHEA business as usual?

Also, the Chief of Police said that the Police Department was normal staff for a Tuesday night and they've always done it that way, and only add more officers to the schedule on Friday and Saturday. That seems pretty silly, considering Monday-Thursday should be considered a typical Friday night.

I personally find mob mentality a very interesting subject of human psychology.

No one wants to miss out on large events. No one wants to be the one guy left out. So they go to "just see whats going on". But by doing so, they exasperate the problem. The difference is, do they leave when **** hits the fan, or do they stay around, pull out their phone, and allow for the mob to continue?

Do I blame people for wanting to go to welch ave? No. Do I think they should be punished, because they helped the situation by sticking around and giving the mob more power? Yes.

Anyone who thinks its over is just overreacting. It'll be cancelled, but it's not over. You don't end a long *** tradition because some young drunk ****s decided to be **** ups.

If these rumors are true that someone was seriously injured as a DIRECT result of the riot, then it's not an overreation. That's a game changer that we haven't seen in the past.

If the worse rumors are true and that person died? I'd say it's a given. And rightfully so.

you're joking right?

Nope - responsibility is a *****, get used to it. Ever heard of guilty by association? These guys are our ambassadors, and to some, role models. There is no reason to give them a reason to want to try being near these types of activities again.

This. That was disgusting. I have so much respect for the cops keeping their cool in that situation. Throwing glass bottles at police officers? WTF?! We are lucky none of them are seriously injured as well.

I was on the fence all morning, but I'm not anymore. Shut down VEISHEA.

^^^ I am with this (I am willing to sound like an old man for only being 30) but it is is just immature narcissism of un-creative kids who want to "have a cool experience" as part of the mob where they can take some selfies to put on Instagram.

If that means some kid gets hit in the head by a light pole and the cops have to have beer bottles thrown at them and city workers have to get out of bed at 4 am to clean up the exposed electrical wires, they don't care...they tweeted out a grainy Vine of it.

(Has to be said the "prior generations" - I saw the beginnings in '04 - talking up the "you must have a crazy cool college experience" and "back in my day" tall tales don't help...)

Well let's put it this way. They have the same number of cops for all of Ames but if you robbed Wal-Mart last night you were gonna get away

I don't know. Veishea wasn't created to drink and riot. It was created to celebrate some of our colleges. So if by "usual" you mean still celebrating our colleges, sure. If you mean back to partying like last night, no, I doubt it.

Yeah, it really is a fascinating study. And I think it would be interesting to continue to study as more and more people have phones and feel the need to document said things. I also would hope human instinct would take over and getting away from danger would prevail.

I bet it gets canceled but I don't think it will help. The students have already made plans to get drunk all week and I don't think you can stop them.

The problem is how to separate everything.

I think you cancel it altogether for 5 years so hopefully all current students are gone and then you bring back something under a different name that is the on-campus celebration of the colleges only with no concerts or anything extra like that and with a curfew in place. That's if you bring it back at all.

Now on twitter a bunch of Greeks are asking for the Greek community to come together and lead Veishea to what it SHOULD be.

Right, because you guys weren't a huge part of this.

I would suspend any players there for a game. It will be little sisters of the poor anyway. Like it or not these guys are role models to the community and they screwed up.

You serious Clark?

I was "involved" in the '92 riot...came out of Peoples and started walking towards my buddy's house on Welch towards the Towers...group of people were marching down Welch carrying a couch and chanting, "VEISHA! VEISHA!"...we just kind of got caught up in the crowd because there was no way to get through them...of course the crowd grew as it went and ended up at Lincoln Way standing around chanting more "VEISHAs"...of course some idiots were standing on cars and damaging some things...then the cops showed up on Lincoln Way and shot tear gas up Welch and everyone dispersed...

So by your logic, I should've been punished for rioting? It was more of standing around watching and thinking, I can't believe this is happening...

As long as the players weren't causing any damage or doing anything destructive, I see no reason what-so-ever for them to be suspended...there's nothing wrong with standing there watching people be idiots.

Has this video been posted yet? I can't imagine being a cop in that situation, knowing how badly you're outnumbered and that **** could get real at any minute.

I saw my daughter in that video. Bummer.

I've always loved how a lot of those "communities" like to act superior the next day but in the end are half the problem in the beginning since they usually have some of the biggest parties and SOME already think they're better than everybody else (including the cops).

I like the idea of a curfew set in place prior to the night of so we don't get riots.

I think the concerts are a good idea. They bring in pretty good names, give us good money, and no riot or police assistance was probably ever needed at the concerts. Sure, people probably sneak alcohol in, but it's on the complete opposite side of campus as the partying. I'm sure the concerts would come back and all the events at the MU as well.

Other than the damage and the possible injuries, the worst part has to be the holier than thou attitudes right now on Twitter and Facebook.

This. I'm not going to pretend I wouldn't have wanted to be at least part of the crowd that was watching all of the chaos ensue.
