I've always been a big Solomon Young fan, and I've remained bullish on his future even after some rough games this year. I think people forget he's basically played about one full season of college basketball right now. He was a monster on D and on the glass. More than anything he does lots of little things that are hard to notice. Last night Wigginton beat his guy off the dribble and Young saw it and screened the help defender, giving LW a wide open layup. There are certainly some small ball games where it will be tough for Young and Lard to play together much. But if they bring it like last night there are few conference teams in the conference that can match that physicality and activity up front.

Physically, Young looks like a friggin monster, and it was nice to see him exert some of that strength last night. Konate is not small by any means, but the way that Young ripped the ball away on some rebounds, it was like he finally decided "Alright, I've had enough" and just absolutely overpowered the guys around him.

Solomon's positioning on defense, denying entry passes, was beautiful last night, too. Nothing that shows up on the stat sheet, but he was getting it done.

I have never seen a team break WVU's press so effortlessly like we did last night. Not once was I anxious because our guard caught it in the corner. Talley was a composed inbound option who brought it up when need be without having problems. Overall super impressed with how we played offensively, not many times you see Bob Huggins completely give up on his press.

Not even the backcourt with Kane and Morris, or the Morris-Naz-Thomas-Georges years. As the link alludes to, part of that was WVU’s press without Miles being substandard, but Prohm had them well-schooled on when to break it with the pass and when to clear out and allow Talley to go against a forward.

One thing I thought we did different was to be very slow picking the ball up to inbound after a made basket. Instead of trying to hurry up and inbound before they can set up the press we waited until our guys were settled into position. It was all very methodical and not chaotic which can lead to confusion.
This...additionally, there were only a couple of times when Wiggs got caught up in the press pace and drove to the hoop out of control (which WV wants you to do...take that hurry shot which typically is off balance). Nice pace to the offense that pressed the pace when it was there or settled into the half court for either a 3 ball or push inside to the bigs. WV just looked caught in between on so many possessions...

Wiggy looked pretty beat up in the presser, cuts and scratches all over arms, also some on face.

I just got through watching the replay on ESPN (couldn't pay full time attention last night).

He took a lot of big hits.

Jevon Carter tried to break some ribs at one point.

Then somebody tried the ol' Woodbury on him, too.

I was worried he had a concussion after the big hit on the 3 point shot.

Yeah you could tell on TV he didn’t really hit back of head on the floor much. I think he suffered some Woody like eye pokes though.

A flagrant 1 foul is essentially just a common foul in a shooting situation. The foul is enforced like any other common foul while shooting with the added bonus of getting the ball back out of bounds at the spot of the foul.

If a flagrant is called in a non-shooting situation, you are awarded 2 foul shots + the ball out of bounds at the spot closest to the foul.
Exactly. Here is what the rule book says on the issue:

e. Three free throws for: A personal foul against a player who attempts a three-point field goal and whose try is unsuccessful. When the personal foul is a flagrant 1 or flagrant 2 personal foul, the ball also shall be awarded to the offended team at a designated spot using the procedures in Rule 7-3.2.

It's on the top on page 93 if you want to look it up yourself.

So I muted announcers last night. Watching today with sound to laugh at them. Color guy seems pissed at WVa for losing.

Amazing what Jeff Prohm can do after losing Matt Carroll.

Pretty sure high school sophomore that does our games on radio is better than these guys.

That was maybe the strongest we've played inside since the Homan years.

Nope--not buying any of it.
1) We have the resources that we shouldn't have to wait for someone to "learn what it takes to win in this league." This is Power 5, the Big XII, not the American Red Cross.
2) The fact that we have such a thin roster should be enough to show him the door. Did the fact that we had 4 Senior starters last year sneak up on CSP? Good God, he was hired before their Junior year. He had 2 years to avoid this "rebuilding."
3) In game decisions, especially concerning Time Outs, are really shaky. Way too many times he calls time out after the horse has left the barn. Also, end of game offense in tight games is just an embarrassment and has already cost us 3-4 wins this year.
4) Seemingly everyone around the program is willing to give him a Mulliigan this year and are waiting for next year. That benevolence sucks, especially for a Power 5 team, but next year better be a Round of 32 at least or this guy needs to be sent packing.

Go back to the Missouri board.[/QUOTE]

Good god man, based on your rules, there are about 15 coaches in the country qualified to be power 5 coaches.

ISU has always done well with breaking the press. What has given ISU the most issues in the past was WVU was so physical and our team wasn't made the handle that. The way this WVU team pressed allowed ISU to play fast and not have to run a half court offense all the time, and this team is pretty good when they play fast. Its the half court that gives them fits.

I think you’re right maybe on the why. I just don’t feel that is an acceptable way to coach at least to the extent it happens. Playing to March is a real thing but in multi bid conferences you can’t do it in spite of the regular season. For years like this year where coming in with the talent there was a real possibility of a bubble shot it is super important to value the regular season as that may be what gets you into the tournament.

He's not just coaching for this year, he's coaching these guys for the next 2-4 years. Lessons learned now will pay dividends down the road. Bad habits broken now will pay dividends down the road.
