I'm not going to speculate on his reasons. I will only add this. As a person who played 5 years of college football I have seen many of people quit for many reasons. Admittedly none of them had the timing of this. However I had the luxury of never playing on a team with a losing record.

My main point is these types of things are very unpredictable.
I've had teammates quit for the following reasons.

Missed deer hunting too much
Landed a killer internship in Washington DC on capital hill
Got a girl knocked up
Missed their girlfriend
Was failing all classes
Wanted to focus on maintaining high GPA
Decided to play basketball at a different school
Wanted to party more
Missed milking cows too much (seriously) Been there.

:jimlad:

Point is he felt his reason was worth leaving and focusing on the next stage of his life. I am concerned about the direction of things but just wanted to point out that his reasons could also have nothing to do with the program.

I agree with you that there is certainly a difference between the teams in your two examples. However, at this point in his tenure I guess my point is the decision to keep him or let him go is ultimately going to come down to his ability to win football games. If he is let go it will be because he couldn't convert wins. No one will know for quite some time whether or not he lost the team for sure.

I've heard things, and it sounds like others have as well, but as long as Rhoads is the coach a lot of people are going to refuse to believe them. I guess that's what I meant by saying the speculation doesn't really matter. There's a lot of people involved in a football program. One person may talk to a player who likes Rhoads and one person may talk to one who says they hate him. That doesn't mean either person is wrong. It just means when there's as many people involved in the program as there is then there is going to be a wide variety of opinions, and everyone is going to argue with each other about it.

Once the end result is more clear people will get back on the same page. Unfortunately, what we do know is that it's going to be an uphill battle for the team to win games this year, and that isn't going to bode well for CPR.

One if the coolest things you can tell someone when you are in your 30s is "yeah I played div1 college football" I dont think that I walked away after the first game of my senior year would be something I would share though.

Shoot, that might have come in handy for Gannon if he ever found himself wanting to impress a bunch of pale, friendless virgins who sit in their moms' basements all day playing Madden.

One chick at my work always brings up that she was a D-1 athlete.

We all think she was an entitled "_____" <enter favorite 4 letter word here. No one cares.

I've seen it in a resume. "Well my experience being a division 1 athlete".

I've heard from players that they hate Rhoads.

In my experience, guys who don't want to work tend to use that kind of excuse and it's more common among immature people.

Judging by the level of quit we witnessed in the game against NDSU, I'd say the cancer of weak and immature excuses has spread and that's too bad.

With the news of Gannon leaving, seeing a few comments on how it feels similar to the McDermott era of Cyclone basketball. Went back and found this post in another thread that lists some of the players we would have available this year.

You can add:

DB
Charles Rogers - transferred out to IWCC - SO
Deron Moore - personal reasons - JR

OL
Jacob Gannon - personal reasons - SR

And we wonder why we are always so young and inexperienced. I don't know if this is similar to the turnover at other programs but I think it hurts us more because the only way we can compete with other programs is by having guys in the program for four years - learning and building their bodies. Similar to mid-majors in basketball. We will never attract enough blue-chip talent that can step in and compete at a high level right away.

Here's a complete list:

A resume maybe not but it's fine for a cover letter. Dedication, patience, following-through, teamwork, leadership, etc. I'd be damn sure to mention it.

I'm never gonna be able to talk my brother and his wife into buying season tickets again next year - they weren't happy last year and I talked them into buying tickets this year.

Unless the job involves throwing a leather ball through a hoop or pinning other guys to a wrestling mat, that's a stupid thing to put on a resume.

It's actually a great thing to put on a resume, regardless of the job being applied for.

Fixed for accuracy.
