My dad used to say "Going to see a man about a horse" when he didnt want us kids knowing where he was going. And no it wasn't anything bad he went to do, at worst the bar.
My mom had very colorful speech. Such as:
- higher than a cat's back = expensive
- the fur will fly = there's going to be a fight (disagreement)
- everybody and his dog = a lot of people
- He has more guts than a Christmas goose. = He is very presumptuous.
- You and I are going to have words. = If you do that, you are going to be in trouble.

As the crow flies. But my family uses that a lot still.
