Olympics - (Spoiler Alert!)

So should the DMR and other Iowa outlets not cover the Iowa Caucuses except for the week of the event?? The Caucuses were covered nonstop for 6 months, no one seemed to have a problem with that.

And if you think that the US will forget about Shawn Johnson next week, you are wrong. Shawn trails only Mary Lou Retton, Shannon Miller, and now Nastia in total limetime gymnastics medals...the other 2 names are still recognizable many, many years after they competed.

I think you might find a few people out there who would disagree with you on that. But we don't want this thread getting sent to the cave...or do we?

This picture is worse...

I felt sick to my stomache when I heard as well...

Damn, what a terrible time to hit a hurdle.

I guess Marty and Miller will be talking about how she choked today...

I just read about Lolo, and wow! She is the best in the world - - when she doesn't hit a hurdle. That is going to tear her up to know she had a gold medal with one hurdle to go and blew it and didn't even medal due to the error.

The difference being that the Iowa Caucuses are an event that actually happens inside Iowa that has huge national and international implications. Having future world leaders running around every corner of your state making national headlines every day for months is a whole different beast than having one 16 year old kid from the city travelling halfway around the world to bounce around for a week and win a couple of chunks of metal. If you don't see the difference in the nomination of Obama to be the Democratic candidate and the historical implications thereof and Shawn Johnson winning a gold medal, this is a pretty hopeless debate.

I didn't say next week, I said a month or three from now. Sure people will remember who she is. She will host SNL or something. And then, a few months later, she's going to fade from everyone's consciousness until the next Olympics, when people start caring about fringe Olympic sports again. Just like Shannon Miller. Or Keri Strug. Or Dan O'Brien. Or Michael Phelps. Or any number of other athletes who just don't really matter to most of the sporting world most of the time.
