I still remember when I first heard "The Sweater Song." Driving from Twin Cities on the way back to Michigan, listening to what I assume was a "modern rock" station in the area, somewhere near the Wisconsin/Illinois border. I bought The Blue Album soon after I returned.

I was at work. We were all getting our PC's connected to the internet. Up to that point only a few were connected. The guy in our engineering office who was doing it (before we had a consolidated IT office) was a bit younger. To show us what the internet was, among other things, he linked us to the video of "Just Like Buddy Holly." So I was introduced that way and did a bit more research and then also bought the CD. Really one of my favorite 90's albums top to bottom.

Goddamn, I'm embarrassed that I didn't remember this one immediately. For some reason I had it in my head that this was '93 release. One of my all time favorites and I deeply regret not going to his last show in Des Moines.

Damn, what a great music year. I turned 16 this year, so I was already full of angst. The music just made it angstier.

A couple more albums to add. Starting with …

Frank Black
“Teenager of the Year”
May 23, 1994

Toward the end of the ‘90s, I was convinced this was the best album of the decade. That's probably was a stretch, but it definitely was one of the most innovative. It has only sporadic similarity to Black’s breakthrough band Pixies, and was out of step with post-grunge. That helps it sound more fresh now than some of the more prominent releases of its day.

“TOTY” goes in all kinds of directions musically and lyrically. It shifts gears frequently, track-to-track and sometimes more than once during a song. Rarely a dull moment. There’s plenty of straight folk and rock, but some tracks take a while to grow on you. It's worth the effort.

The "big hit" --- #10 Modern Rock chart

Narrative involves a twisted timeline of what’s now Los Angeles. Cool song even without focusing on the lyrics.

“My name is Chip / And I’m different”

Protagonist yearns to penetrate the inner circle of a truck-driving CB club ....

Since it is football season, I initially thought this thread was about the 25th anniversary of the 1994 football season ......so I was very happy to see this was about the music of 1994 instead.

Eek! Think of all the fond recollection that thread would inspire. ;)

hell, as a 10-year-old kid, i could tell how special this year was. the ones that stuck out at the time to me were Blues Traveler, Hootie, Weezer, Beastie Boys, Warren G, Beck, and Boyz II Men. it was hit after solid hit that year on the radio and MTV.

One more from my official Top 5 + 1. I have a short list of honorable mentions, I may post those later if they haven’t been referenced.

Mighty Mighty Bosstones
“Question the Answers”

I don’t go back to this too much these days, but it was in my heavy rotation for several months in ’94/’95.
