Metallica replaced Dave Mustaine with Kirk Hammett which worked well for both. Metallica also replaced original bassist Ron McGovney with Cliff Burton (RIP), then Jason Newstead, then Robert Trujillo.

They also hired a last minute stand-in drummer for Ringo for the first portion of their 1964 World Tour. Jimmy Nicol was brought in about 24 hours before the tour kicked off when Ringo was hospitalized for a tonsillectomy.

He played 8 shows before Ringo was well enough to be released and fly to meet the rest in Australia.

So, Joe Jackson created an album for the movie Mike's Murder, but the movie ended up using a score from somebody else. So, what did Joe do? He released the Mike's Murder Soundtrak anyway! He was "Replaced", but he still kicked that ass!

Johnny Cougar was replaced by John Cougar who was then replaced by John Cougar Mellencamp and then finally John Mellencamp. Amazingly, all four artists sound pretty much the same.
And I have seen them ALL in concert! Orlando, Ames and Cincinnati!

Thin Lizzy turned over one of their two lead guitar spots several times. It went from Eric Bell to Gary Moore to Scott Gorham. Gorham held the job during their heyday, including The Boys Are Back in Town. They also replaced singer & bassist Phil Lynott after his death but the good times were over.

it wasn't immediate, but Wilco went through a lot of changes early before settling on the latest lineup for the last 20 years. Jay Bennet leaving and the addition of Nels Cline was huge.

Almost every hair metal band of the 80s went through line up changes before they got signed to record deals. It's amazing how many of them switched bands and still got famous.

Highway 101 had to replace lead singer Paulette Carlson with Nikki Nelson when she decided to do a solo career. Paulette did not have a successful solo career and while Highway 101 did have some songs chart in the top 40 with Nikki they didn't sound quite the same performing their old hits live. Another fun fact, Cactus Moser eventually married Wynonna Judd and plays drums in her band now.

Lonestar had some different configurations over the years. The original group included John Rich who eventually left the band but the real story was he was actually kicked out of the group due to artistic differences. It worked out well for both because Lonestar put out some big hits without him and John wrote a bunch of #1 hits for other artists and became half of the duo Big & Rich. Before he split with Lonestar he wrote some of their hits like "Come Cryin' To Me." Richie McDonald has been the lead for most of the groups biggest hits but even he has left the group twice now, once in 2007 for a solo career and he was replaced by Cody Collins then Collins left in 2011 and McDonald returned and departed again in 2021 to join The Frontmen. Here's a song where each sung lead on

Running late for this session of On that note...

Clyde McPhatter of "Billy Ward and his Dominoes" left to form The Drifters and was replaced by Jackie Wilson.

The Dominoes' "Sixty Minute Man" was pretty risque for the early 1950's. Some claim that it is the first rock and roll song.

Foo Fighters replaced Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic with Taylor Hawkins (and later Josh Freese), Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, and Nate Mendel, to name a few. That seemed to work out.
