There were several remakes of "So You Want to Be a Rock n Roll Star."







I really like the Patti Smith version. REM also performed it on stage early in their career.

I'm not exactly sure what it is but this is the REM tune that most brings the feeling of a Byrds song to me. I know part of it is the guitar but there's more to it than that.


Tom Petty has been mentioned several times. This is from Damn the Torpedoes. Definitely the first artist I think of when I think of influences the Byrds had on future stars.

You have to use your imagination a little on this to hear the subtle Byrdsishness. The jangle/chime/harmonizing is filter through several stylistic layers (punk, thrash, hint of metal), but it’s there. That’s the way I hear it, anyway.

Sort of related, sort of an aside: in the mid to late 80s, there was a female country duo called Sweethearts of the Rodeo which scored seven top 10 hits. I didn't know until I just looked it up that they had named themselves after the Byrds album.
