A person in CA confused Iowa and Idaho with me once, asked if I ate a lot of potatoes growing up, and her next statement was “but they are right next to each other”.

My drill instructor nicknamed me "potato" in Boot Camp because I was from Iowa. The problem was I could not correct a Drill Instructor . So I had to be Potato for a freakin month until another drill instructer from Idaho ask where I was from in Idaho. I said "this recruit is from Iowa". Then he bent me because I let the other DI call me Potato and I was not from Idaho and I should have been nicknamed Corn. I was in a no win situation.

That is the goal of boot camp. Put the recruits in no win situations so you can break them down then eventually build them back up how they want them to be. If it wasn't that, it would have been something else.

Kind of like they were trying to get at in Star Trek with the whole Kobayashi Maru test, (I know, a terrible analogy) they want you to experience no-win situations so you have to get used to still funtioning when there is no way to win. Sometimes you may have to be cannon fodder or hold an untenable position for the greater good.

But you were a Marine. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.
