Here’s my take, it’s the Mike Tyson Theory “everybody has a plan until you get hit in the mouth”. Our Head Coach played OL in the NFL and he spent more time with our unit than other groups. His mantra was “he who hesitates is lost” which came from his NFL coach Weeb Eubanks. We spent hours practicing blocking assignments in preparation against our future opponents tendencies and alignments. The difference between OL & DL personnel is cerebral & instinct. OL have to have a coordinated execution based on timing while DL basically hit and react. Going back to Tyson, the problem for OL is that the plan they have in their mind gets changed instantly when the DL stunts and the LB or DB blitz. That’s why our current OL coach identified finding the most violent five or so OL. Because when you get hit in the mouth, it’s a brawl and the tuff guy wins.Exactly that's what scout team means.
But the players running with the scout team aren't being developed in practice/meetings on the techniques/philosophies to run the opponents offense/defense. Their main developmental focus is on what ISU does offensively or defensively. But like I said, just a theory.
