Nothing is really cheap. My Direct TV bill pisses me off every month. Very expensive. All sorts of fees and charges and b.s. But I pay it. That's how it is in 2011. If I don't like it, I can always just hook up an antenna and go with the local stations only.

I feel the same way when my Direct TV bill comes...a leasing fee on boxes I purchased upfront? I don't like that fee at all!

I think the bigger issue is the Mediacom "full price" is not even remotely competitive, at least on the TV side.
The internet is nice, but I think you have a lot of people -- like myself -- ready to make the jump to satellite but are a little skittish about what is going to happen to internet speeds, streaming netflix etc...

So switch TV to satellite and keep Mediacom for Internet. That's what I do.

Why do people feel like they are being done wrong with their promotional rate ends and their bill gets "jacked up" to the full, regular price? That was the arrangement all along. They hook you with the low rate, but it's temporary. Do people not understand the concept?

What are people going to switch to? All television and internet is expensive now. A person can't spend their whole life jumping from plan to plan to save a few bucks.

My price was not supposed to have an expiration date. We had it for 2 years or so at that price, and then we added phone service for $5 a month, decided we didn't want it, and when we canceled that part they jacked everything up. If it was a set thing that it was going to expire then so be it, but it ticks me off when I'm told nothing and our bill goes up by $50...

The stupid thing on their end is that we would have likely never switched over from what we had, but now they're going to be out the $960 or so a year that they were getting from us because they are stubborn morons. I've never understood companies that treat non-customers so much better than their customers...

I agree. If only people would stop screwing around calling in and threatening to switch plans every month, maybe we could all have a more affordable rate. Now, a few people somehow manage to get extreme deals while the rest of us pay exorbitant rates.

You don't think the rest of us are paying exorbitant rates?

I agree with Senolcyc. I'm not sure why some people think they should be keeping their promotional rates forever. Get your promotional rate, enjoy it, and then pay the same as the rest of us. It won't be long until we all have to sign cable/satellite provider contracts and ETF's just like we do with cell phones because of everyone jumping around to different providers trying to get promotional deals.

Until the cities in the DSM metro climb out of bed with Mediacom, you will continue to pay through the roof for cable. They will continue to use the cheap introductory pricing to lure you in, then raise the rates when it's over. Mediacom owns all the lines, so they can get away with this, just like Qwest owns the phone lines and does the same thing.

For those people having problems with mediacom, report them to the better business bureau. Raise the pain and make them blink as a large group.

Call mediacom, tell them you are really thinking about switching to satellite and theyve offered you XXX deal (do some research on this to get a reasonable figure.. itll be their promotional deal so itll be lower most likely). Tell them that you're willing to consider staying if they can come close to that, otherwise, you'd like to cancel.

They will most likely transfer you into their retentions departnment where you can tell them the same story, and they should offer you a much lower rate on contract.

For best results, call during daytime hours when their retentions dept is up and running (dont believe they run overnight when calls get routed out of the country).

this. I did exactly this, and they gave me a rate of 80 for cable/sports pak/internet for 2 years.

They won't give a rip about complaints coming in from the BBB. The BBB can't tell them how to do business, and having bad marks from them doesn't mean **** as they're still the only cable provider in town.

I’ve been sticking with my DISH Network employee account since they set me up with the Logitech Revue with Google TV so that I have extreme integration with the internet and my DVR, and they just set me up with a free Sling Adapter. I guess different providers are good for different people based on preferences; I always recommend people to go to BestTvForMe.com to compare the differences between providers in order to choose the right one for their home.

Here is an option for those looking for alternatives to mediacom cable TV.

I had a two year deal contract deal with mediacom. After the first year of the contract was up they raised the monthly price (which was expected) and I decided that I didn't want to pay that. I contacted Mediacom and asked them to remove the cable TV and pay only for their basic cable 12 Mbps down / 1 up. To my surprise I did not have to pay a termination fee (which I assume is due to the fact I still kept the internet service and not completely terminate their services, but I can be wrong). I pay a flat monthly rate for the internet which customer service told me will never increase.

I then purchased and antenna and mounted it in the attic. I live in the Cedar Rapids area and I get 25 channels through it. Lastly, I purchased Netflix for $10/month (got the DVD upgrade). So grand total I pay approx $70 / month in internet and TV/movies.

I've never heard of having to agree to a contract deal with Mediacom and they've never had termination fees, to my knowledge (at least not such like those in the cell phone business). They offer the 12 month deals all the time to new customers but there is no obligation to stay with them after that timeframe.
