In D2 this year after being in G7 for 8 years. I can’t believe how much faster it is to get out of the paved lots. I don’t think I’ve waited more than 10 or 15 minutes. Been super happy after games this year. Getting in on the other hand is absolutely miserable if you’re not early.
That was my experience the first 2 games. Yesterday we sat for well over an hour to get out of D2.

Guys, is this your first rodeo? Its been like that at night games for years. Especially when they are close. It's late so no one wants to stick around and tailgate. You can only get 50,000 people leaving all at the same time from a realtively small area out of there so fast.

I’m G6 as well, literally got out of the lot in 3-4 minutes and was back to Waukee before 11pm. We were actually confused on how we got out so fast but certainly not complaining.
That was my experience as well in G6. Back in Waukee by 11:10.

Humble brag. I'm sure G6 is a breeze now that G7 is converted to motor homes. I parked in G7 for years and getting of there after night games was ******* brutal.

Parked on campus for the first time in a while (it was free, which was nice). Obviously no tailgating, but I had a full day of other stuff and only got to Ames about 90 minutes before kickoff. After the game, it took a little over 20 minutes to walk from my seat in JTS to my car on the west end of campus (good exercise and time to work through some anger), then I drove west on Lincoln Way to South Dakota before heading back east on 30 and south eventually to DSM area. Was home by 11pm, about when multiple callers to Cyclone Reaction were complaining they couldn’t get out of the lots. I knew with a night game it would be a mess. Traffic between Duff exit and I-35 was also as bad as I’ve ever seen it - we had to slam on the brakes and were literally stopped for a while.

On another note, we just about had a really bad accident with some idiot who decided to exit 30 eastbound at University, even though the exit was closed, there were multiple signs, super bright lights, and a cop sitting right there. This car slammed on their brakes, swerved from the left lane, took out a cone, and just continued down the ramp like it wasn’t a big deal. About 3-4 other cars were in front of me and much closer to having a collision.
We usually park on campus and really wish we had this time. Husband thought walking in the dark would be better in grass lots even though we have walked to campus in dark many times. Had to pick up our dog from a relative in DM metro and didn’t want to keep him up super late.

Only took five minutes after the game to get to the car but spent well over an hour getting out of the lot. Got on I-35 at 11:05 and picked up the dog at 11:30. Got home in the boonies a little after 1:00 am, and dog wanted to play fetch. If it wasn’t so late we would probably just get some stuff out for tailgating and chill in lot.

I know night games are a different animal, but getting out of S7 was a nightmare. Sat for 45 minutes without even moving. Took over an hour and a half after the game ended just to get back to Nevada.

I agree, we were in the haunted forest and took about that long for us to get out. We live in North Ames and drove by the long line of cars on South 4th as we turned north onto Grand.

Got out of G4 faster than any game so far. No one tried to force me towards Duff either which I prefer not to because not only is that a left turn but I head west on 30 to get out of town so going East to Duff just adds more time. Last home game there was traffic on 16th going west and the attendant tried to get me to turn left to go east. Just said "nope" and turned right like they had let some other cars ahead of me do. I think the traffic on University seems to flow better with the new pedestrian bridge so it's already helping some not having to stop traffic for pedestrians as much.

One of the biggest problems were people like you, they need to shut Lincoln eastbound down. That was the biggest issue.

The other issue was people from the other lots were going north into us around Hilton. They would bumper to bumper and not let anyone alternate in like the rest usually do. Then the guy in front of me went to the back of his pickup, grabbed a drink and let a whole run of cars infront of him. Thanks bud!!

I've been to many night games, NEVER been close to that bad leaving C5 (and it seems like the majority of people there were staying to tailgate). We literally moved 15 feet in 60 minutes. K State buses were gone long before we got out of the lot. All of the S lots were empty by the time we got out, can't say I've ever seen that, either.

We assumed there was some major accident with how nobody in our lot was moving. By the time we got out, it looked like they only had 1 lane of the SE exit going left to University - that didn't help..

Where do people park on campus?'

I guess we all have our own unique experiences. I've had season tickets for 20 years, and I felt like what happened was pretty typical and completely predictable. I told my group we either needed to haul ass after the game or plan on sitting around for an hour or more, so we just hung around and tailgated until the traffic cleared. Watched the end of the Alabama A&M game. Took a little over an hour (I don't know exactly) and we drove out no problems from C2. Looked like the lots had pretty well cleared out at that point to me.

Took 45 minutes to get out of C1. I am sure some of it is short staffing but they need to take a serious look at how they get people out of there. Traffic on university should never stop moving south of Mortensen with only occasional breaks north of there for letting traffic in from mortensen. They have the troopers there but it seems like most of the time they don't do anything.

Absolutely no left turns!

Is Ames not ticketing on the streets West of JTS anymore? I parked on McCarthy and didn’t see 1 sign regarding game day parking. I know they made a big deal about that a few years ago. I talked to a couple other people parking on that street and they were wondering the same thing. We all risked a ticket, but never got one.

Left stadium after last 3 & out with less than 2:00 left. S5 to University to 30 West. Quickest ever but could see what was rapidly developing. With only University as the only way out for that many vehicles there are only 3 choices: leave early, sit in line while listening to painful post game radio babble or wait it out in parking lot tailgate. People who complain about post game departure head aches remind me of the old saying if you can’t do the time don’t do the crime.

C3 here, and it was bad. Main issue I saw was the State Patrol not letting traffic on University flow, but rather letting the traffic on S 4th Street keep turning onto University. Once we got past that, it wasn't awful.

That's the thing, though. University isn't the only way out, but a lot of people fail to realize that it's possible to actually save time by going a longer distance.

The problem is that it's just a bunch college kids directing the traffic now and they are different every week. There are also other areas of opportunity where either the state patrol or the city of Ames could help direct the flow. Either way I won't complain, I've made plenty of trips to Iowa City....

We loaded up our RV after a massive tailgate, but saw traffic standing still on University. Where was the bottleneck?

  • University Blvd. and S. 16th/Reiman Gardens?
  • University Blvd. and US-30?
  • US-30 and I-35?
