I’ve got a Traeger 780 pro. It has the digital display and WiFi connection and it’s been great. I am waiting on a replacement auger for it right now though because the weld broke that connected it to the motor shaft.
Who did you contact for maintenance on it? Someone local to you? I’ve got a few questions for a repair guy if I could find one. Also, anyone know where to get another thermometer for a Traeger? One of my two busted.

I actually chatted with their customer service through text messages.

I have a Traeger and love it. I am thinking about adding a smoke tube though because my old electric cabinet style smokers produced much more smoke flavor

Do it. It works and went through the exact same issue.

I’m hoping Hawgeyes has a GMG sitting there that I can check out.

I just went a checked out the Pitboss and Traeger and the Pitboss felt way better built for whatever reason. It felt thicker everywhere but that doesn’t mean the heating element/auger and electronics are up to par I guess.
They have them at Sportsman's Warehouse in Ankeny...or at least that's where I got mine.

Marion Grill works will set you up nicely. If that’s too far, call them they will point you in the right direction.

Family business, key employee is ISU alum, FB ticket holder, Gridiron club giver.

Oh, choose green mountain.

Any recommendation on which one to get?
Make sure it has caps that can screw on both sides. Makes less of a mess. You only need to start one side with a blow torch IMO. There’s several good YouTube videos for it but it’s pretty self explainatory. You will want to play with it some to get it right as far as time.

I have a Pit Boss. I'd say I got exactly what I paid for. It works well and I've used it a lot. Like that I can slide the grate aside for open flame.

Like others have pointed out it does produce uneven temperatures from left to right. Since i am usually smoking stuff for many hours i will just rotate my food about half way through the process.. I also wish I had a PID temperature controller to reduce overall temperature fluctuation.Sometimes also wish it had wifi. Over all, though, I have been happy with it.
Edit: It is a regular style. Not verticle.

Welp, after Hawgeyes told me the GMG choice grills are on back order and they had no idea when they could get them, I ended up with this. It just felt crazy sturdy compared to the Traeger. It has the WiFi/Bluetooth and was only 500 bucks.

After having one with WiFi for a little over a year I’d never go without.

Had a traeger for a long time and loved it. My brother got one a couple years ago and I think the quality has gone down as they’ve gotten more popular.

Thats kind of what it felt like. The Pit Boss has the feel of what I thought a Traeger would have felt like. There was absolutely no question which one was more solid.

I’ve got a Traeger Pro Series 34. Bought it used off a guy who used it maybe 10 times and never cleaned it or seemed to take care of it. Cleaned it up and it works great.

HOWEVER, question for other Traeger owners, about 3 or 4 times, Ive lost my fire and temp drops, obviously. I have to take it apart and suck it out with my shop vac. Then start it back up and it seems to go again. I have read and do everything I understand in how to run them but is there anything you guys know about this issue? Oddly, it seems to happen when I’m smoking chicken wing so I am able to just finish them on the grill but that can’t have anything to do with it. Is there a good place people go for Traeger maintenance?

Could your loss of fire be due to needing to adjust your P-setting?

I have a Traeger pro 22 and have had a similar issue but not totally the same. The problem I have had with mine is that it chokes itself out. It has happened when I adjust temperatures. It seems to over feed itself and actually shuts off the grill. I have to unplug it to restart, fire it back up but when I do it smokes like crazy and almost has a "pit" fire. It has a fire for a couple minutes and then finally goes out and it runs fine after that. My best guess is for some reason when the temp is adjusted it over feeds itself kills the whole grill.

Have no idea what is going on so I found a good deal on a year old GMG that has wifi and a few other accessories. Can't wait to try it out!
