Yet another "I'm on the Internet and I say I have a source that I refuse to verify with a legitimate link" post.

Do better. You've got the time.

If I were to "out" my source, I would be no better than the fools who outed Valarie Plame when she was with the CIA. It is that sensitive. Do you want my source to lose their job over this?

You know what they say about the back-up drummer; he's always the most popular guy in a college town.

this just in....

the pep-band director is bringing in neil pert as the new asst. director. Pert will play a vital role in recruiting 4/5 star pep-band drummers and emphasize on tempo technique for the young drummers already in the program. however, the problem is that a new pep-band practice facility and new addition to hilton will have to be built to accommodate neil perts idea of a trap set for his pep-band drummers.

Being a drummer I can sympathize with this drummer. When you're put into a situation where you don't have very much experience with songs it is very hard. And the fact that there are 150 songs in the book makes that even harder. When you have to play a song that you don't know or don't know the version of it's not that easy.

And honestly is it really that hard for you to do the 5 claps a little faster. I've been at all of the game this weekend and they seemed fine. A few hiccups here and there but that can be expected with inexperience. So to those of you who have nothing better to do with your time than to cut down drummers on an athletic site it's time to get over yourself.
I haven't been to a game yet, this year, so I don't know how bad it really was. But, what's easier to do: Have one person slow down a tad bit? or, have 12,000ish people speed up their claps a little bit?

Coming from a drummer myself, you have to go with the flow when dealing with very large crowds (especially when the crowd is doing something simple like 5 claps, all of which are in unison). If you try to push a different beat, it will sound sloppy.

I honestly didn't notice a difference in the speed of the claps..a little fast Sunday but nothing too bad. Besides if it's a new drummer cut the kid some slack. He's only been to a couple of games. and 12,000ish..try like 3,000..if that

That's sacrilegious. Those claps have a proper timing.

I agree with this 100%. BTW...what happened to the tune that used to be played all the way to tip off for everyone to clap with (2 Unlimited, I believe)? Last night it cut out early and was replaced by another song that I can not recall at the moment...

Speaking of music being played, at one point during a big run by ISU and a TO called by Drake, did I really hear "All the Single Ladies" by Beyonce being played for the "pump up" song?!?!?!
Seriously, sometimes they need to stop trying so many new things and stick to what works.

Unfortunately, yes.

Amazing Breaking News -- Our Pep Band Drummer just got put on the Neil Peart (Rush) Wath List. This is the award given out to the Nation's Top Pep Band Drummer. Unfortunatley, as is the case with every collegiate award watch list -- every other person that plays that position in Division I is also on the Watch List.

Still great news and much deserved. A real rags-to-riches/goat-to-hero story for our Pep Bank Drummer. Way to Go!

I did notice that they added a bass guitar this year. Can we request more cowbell too? Gotta have more cowbell!

Actually there's always been a bass guitar (in men's anyway, NCAA doesn't allow it in women's), although this year's player is new. He's a walk-on from the trumpet section, and we expect big things from him this year.

It's because I'm not in charge of music anymore...

TO songs are meant to get the crowd excited and clapping, not looking around at each other saying, "Are they really playing this right now?!"

The lap-top lady also played "we will rock you" after a called TO. Not really a great 'pump up' or great clapping song. Too slow.

Song selection is what makes this year's Pep Band so much more entertaining this last year's Pep Band. Last year it was the Grease Soundtrack. We're cranking out to Beyonce now. I think this should also help out with future Pep Band recruiting as well.

Last year the Pep Band was also playing 100 songs. That’s a lot to memorize. This year’s Pep Band memorizes maybe 15 sets and relies more on improvisation. It wasn’t the case back in my day but that’s just the way kids like to play now – up-tempo and fast.
