I read that article too, and I don't think there's much to it. Obviously, if USC would quit losing to crappy teams like Stanford and Oregon State every year, then they wouldn't have to worry about the strength of schedule in the Pac-10.

Let's see - Top 10 team every year, BCS bowl every year, always in the running for the national championship game every year - something tells me that their #1 recruiting classes AREN'T backfiring...

That's what I was thinking...

They contend for a national title almost every year and on their "down" years they still win BCS games. What an epic fail those great recruiting classes have been.:wideeyed:

The only time i'm pulling for USC is when they play a Big 10 team...They have a monopoly in the Pac-10...

Just like anything that seems to be going too good, it will correct itself... Skippy will start to get some recruits, Erickson will graba a few, even Harbaugh might take a few talented smart kids... The Pac 10 will even out in the next few years. Guys aren't going to want to compete with 5 other 5 star guys for play time when they can go somewhere else and play...

Ditto that.

I didn't even read the article because it must be total idiocy if they are implying that the top recruiting classes that SC gets are hurting their program...what lunacy.

The reality is that the only team that usually beats SC is SC...by not really "showing up" for a game or two nearly every year.

For as much as people think USCs depth could be a hinderance in recruiting thier track record of playing freshmen and sophmores kind of de-bunks that idea. USC has a unique practice on wednesdays 11 on 11 in full pads first string O and D. The players that perform the best get to start, that includes freshman. They recruit a specific type of athlete and the culture on the team fosters the level of competitivness within the teams that attracts recruits with and overdeveloped sense of competition. These also happen to be 4 and 5 star recruits typically. I don't think USC is in any danger of lossing any major recruiting wars. Granted they may have a harder time pulling kids our of Florida and Jersey but they still have pick of the litter in the southwest.

Oh and having people like Will Farrell and Snoop Dogg show up at the open practices does not hurt when trying to attract kids to play for you.

What would he have done with adrian petersen. was having reggie bush and lendale white not enough. I find it depressing that their third string qb is a 5 star recruit

I guess I don't get it. Backfiring all the way to only #7 in the nation. When was the last time USC wasn't ranked top 25?

I couldn't imagine having this guy's job. Drop below #2 and they're writing articles about how your awesome recruiting is so awesome that it's bad. Is this opposite day?

What a dumb article. The Pac-10 has been doing fine. If some great player wants to go to USC and sit on the bench, that's their choice. There are plenty of good players for Oregon State, Cal, etc.

Let's not forget that there is a guy that was a back-up QB his entire career at USC and is now starting in the NFL. How much would that help recruiting? "You have a chance to compete for a starting job. And even if you don't win it, you could be starting in the NFL a few years from now"

For USC being in the top 10 doesnt mean all that much. They have the talent to win the National Title every season so anything less is a dissapointment. And what the article points out is if they even loose 1 game they dont play the competition to jump back in the title game without others help. Its not like the big 12 of the sec where losing 1 game (like Florida) and having quality teams to beat will jump them back up

They are like the Detroit Pistons, North Carolina Basketball and so on.

They are victims of their own success. Just having good seasons and being in the top 10 doesnt do much for them. Its winning it all that matters

We would gladly have their problem. But after 5 or 6 years of being in the top 10 you would want a National Title to.

Well you're kind of missing the point. He's saying USC has the talent to win the national championship every year, but they stumble along the way and have no chance of recovery in such a weak conference. Up to that point, the writer is probably right. Look at Oklahoma, Florida, Texas - all 1-loss teams that are still in the hunt. USC is not mentioned even though they also have just 1 loss.

Where I get sketchy on the piece is where he blames USC for the weakness of the rest of the conference. It's a theory that may have a grain of substance, but not much more than that (imo).
