just because fans on fanatic didn't think phillips would leave, doesn't mean the ISU staff didn't. the kid has had academic issues his entire career, this isn't a shocker.

Did I miss something? I know we have 1 too many people for schollies next year, but why would we be losing 2?

No it was just a what if question.
I was wondering if there are any 2011 recruits that we were interested in but didn't have a slot for.
Seems like next year's team could use a true Center.

I am from Marshalltown and I know someone from the school that is involved with MCC athletics and i was told that he talked to the basketball coach and was told that Demarcus is quitting the team and returning to Milwaukee. I don't know what the reason is if it is just a rumor but that is what i have heard up to now.

So IF this happens, what needs to happen for this not to ding up our APR? He needs to be progressing toward graduation, correct? Does that mean that if he is passing all his classes at semester he's satisfied that burden?

Yep Hoiberg also mentioned looking at an above the rim type player in a radio interview just before the season started. I remember questioning what year at the time. Seemed odd timing since we were already over the limit for next year. Maybe the staff was questioning something already back then. Maybe shouldn't be speculating too much yet based on rumors though...

They need to put Bubu on scholarship

Completely agree. As much as it would be cool to give out any extra scholarships to new recruits, I think it sends a bad message when you don't reward the walk-ons in your program. I think long term it is more important for Fred to show potential future walk-ons that coming to ISU could be worth their while if they manage to play their way into the gameday rotation which is exactly what Bubu has done.

I don't think Bubu has really played his way into the gameday rotation. Don't get me wrong, I love Bubu and everything he is doing for our program right now. But he's playing because we don't have anyone else that can play. If Allen and Babb were eligible this year hes probably only seeing slop minutes at the end of blowouts. And long term I think it is more important for Fred to get top recruits here than showing walk-ons that they have the potential to be contributers. One in 1000 walk-ons turn into great players. You have a much better potential with top recruits.

This sounds like the blueprint to building a mediocre basketball program. Walk-ons don't expect to earn a scholarship at big time programs.

If Bubu deserves the scholarship, fine, but not as a method to sell the program to future walk-ons. We need to sell the program to can't miss studs.

For the type of offense Fred wants to run we don't need a center.

My previous statement wasn't really worded all that precisely. I'm not saying that you hand out schollies to walk-ons each and every year. But I think when you do have a guy that has played his way into important minutes that you need to think long and hard about rewarding such a player. I think Bubu is getting close to that point. Fred can sell the program to can't miss studs AND give the occasional scholly to a walk on who has made good. Those aren't mutually exclusive events. And I don't think the only reason he's playing is because of our depleted roster. While the numbers game is obviously a factor, you can't tell me that he's looked lost when he's been put in the game. He's acquitted himself well in the minutes he's seen and is more than just a garbage time scrub in my opinion.

The number of available players is down this year, but we do lose DG and Jake at the end of this season and Scotty and Chris Allen at the end 2012. Even if Bubu doesn't develop into a starter, there are still minutes out there for him to play. At some point, you have to have guys on scholarship that are content playing 15 to 20 minutes a game (if not less) & are willing to defer offensively to the "stars" as well as do the dirty work that doesn't show up in the box score. I think Bubu could be one of those guys for ISU.

If we don't give Bubu a scholarship, somebody else will.

Ok? So what? So we give Bubu a scholarship so that he doesn't leave us for a team like South Dakota State? Does that seem like the plan Fred has in place to get us to the top of the Big 12?

Bubu Palo should not be on scholarship. He is a GREAT walk on. Love the kid's game but he is what he is, a walk on. ISU fans think to much of walk ons due to Greg McDermott's time at ISU. But let me ask fans this, when in the last 20 years have we been good when a walk on has had to play meaningful minutes? Has it happened. You need good walk for practice and that is it
