I took the time to look up and type out their sophomore seasons for comparison. Surprisingly similar.

Then when I went to post it, the site told “had to accept cookies” in order to post—and dumped what I’d typed.

I’m on my phone, and not not typing all out again.

Today it’s TD. By December that may change. One has to wonder what TD could have done behind our current oline though.

Dwayne Crutchfield was hurt in 1981 and did not have the season he should have had but one memory I have is of the Iowa game where early in the 1st quarter Crutchfield went over right guard for a huge gain ....It was our first possession,,, and we went down the field and scored a touchdown...John Quinn going into the end zone for the touchdown!

ONE OF THE GREATEST DAYS TO BE A CYCLONE!!
I vividly remember Crutchfield’s run and that game as well. Iowa had beat Nebraska the week before, and I was really nervous for the game. Crutchfield relieved all my fears when he broke lose on the right side on Iowa State’s first possession. The Cyclones dominated the game and it was one of my fondest memories at Jack Trice. I think Iowa went on to win the Big 10 that year and go to the Rose Bowl, only to get the crap kicked out of them by UCLA or Washington. Unfortunately, that was the start of all the tavern Hawks.

Davis had the best career here and that will never be touched but Breece Hall is a prototype back. Most talented hands down.

I'm throwing Ennis Haywood out there as most underrated RB. A bruiser with versatility, was a very good receiver out of the backfield.
I see your Ennis Haywood and raise you one Stevie Hicks, who was a tank and had at least one 1,000 yard season. McCarney had some good backfields even after the Davis Bros left town.

It was the Univ of Washington with Jacque Vaughn who ran over the squawks to the tune of 20-0.....UCLA came later but the Bruins put like 42 points on the squawks that day in the Rose Bowl.

They are all good, or even great. From Crutchfield to Green, from Davis to Hall. Out of all the accomplishments, even back to back 2k seasons.......until someone comes along and tops the Mizzou game where Davis had 378 rushing yards....378........my vote will be Troy.
Great game and TD had a bunch of rushing yards that were removed for holding calls. He would have had over +400 yards.

Davis.

2000 Yds - Twice
Played behind crappy offensive lines/teams
Everyone keyed on him
Heisman finalist.

He didn’t play behind crappy o lines actually. That was actually all they had

That first McCarney team, like 11 offensive guys played pro football of some sort. Now there was no depth of talent, at all. There weren’t many guys on d that were appropriate at that level.

And, of course, they were beaten down from the previous years of getting beat, and no support from the university. Gene smith was the first ad to even think about investing in facilities since the stadium was built Of course, that led to debt, and the next ad cutting baseball, but it started the process to get to today.
