I would think with the progress made by Rohach and Lazard coming next year this could be an attractive job.

Bob Cole was QB coach before being promoted to OC at NIU.

Lynch was a 2 star QB who only shows on offer from NIU on Rivals. Cole probably had a big hand in developing him, which is a BIG part of what we need.

Bob Cole Bio - NIUHUSKIES.COM - The Northern Illinois Official Athletic Site

Rod Carey (the NIU head coach and former OC under Jerry Kill) might be the mastermind behind the offense, but I think Cole would be a great candidate.

Possibly, but do we want an offense that's so dependent on QB running? I mean, people complained all year about the zone read. Pretty sure Northern Illinois runs that play quite a bit.

I think people who complained about it are silly. Having a running threat at QB is one of the biggest weapons in college football. Yes there's a risk someone will get hurt, but the risk is worth the reward.

Rohach scored on a huge run last night and he's not even our best running threat.

With the issues we've had on o-line, QB better be able to run. The best offenses in the conference have a QB that that is at least somewhat mobile.

ISU still needs the athletes to consistently compete, but I'm OK with Mess being let go. As someone else mentioned--the reverse on that 3rd and 2 was pretty much the closing argument for me.

With ISU ranking so low offensively for the past 5 years, it will be interesting to see if there's any improvement next year, and how the fan base collectively feels.

Tony Peterson, OC at La Tech, ought to be considered.

Tony was co-OC/QB/passing coach under Glenn Mason at Minnesota, which was a strong, run first program during those years, 1999-2006. Mason was canned the same year as McCarney, and Tony was subsequently hired as QB coach at Iowa State for Gene Chizik's 2 years. Tony also played at Marshall, and has coached there twice in addition to a transition year at South Dakota. He definitely has the regional pedigree for the Iowa State job.

IMHO, Tony was the best QB coach Austin Arnaud had in the 3 regimes he endured, and he was a big loss for ISU when Chizik departed. Austin, if you are out there, would you endorse Tony for this job?

Re: Williams: Who will be the next OC?

Todd Sturdy or Chris Klenakis - Sturdy brought to coach his strong suit in passing game, Klenakis brought to coach his strong suit in running game. Both are good solid hires and I like what I'm already seeing on O-Line recruits being much bigger in the 2013 class (Klenakis influence). They both should see larger influence in the O play calling and recruiting targeting imo going forward.
Umm...Cole Anderson is 6'5" 264. Kodanko is big--and not quick enough for tackle. I don'tknow much about Windham.

I will, however, point out that Marty Fine's recruits were also "bigger" guys................. 'nuff said.

I like the idea of Sage, just because CPR has been hiring veteran coaches, and it would be nice to see some young blood added. Maybe a younger guy for the RB coach?

Steve Loney from Marshalltown, is an ISU grad, and former McCarney assistant. He has coached at Iowa State, Minnesota, and UConn. He is also a legend in the profession from his out-of-nowhere winning season as (non-scholarship FCS) Drake's HC for their winning season in 2007.
Steve has also coached OL for the Minnesota Vikings, St Louis Rams, and currently with Tampa Bay of the NFL. Who knows if he wants to come home, but the Tampa HC is known to be on the hot seat, so Steve may be looking for a gig anyway.
With Iowa State, Steve was a contemporary of both coach Rhoads and Sage Rosenfels. He could be a good mesh, especially if Sage wants to ease into this by starting out as just the QB coach. Steve also, I happen to know, is a favorite of Viking play-by-play, and KFAN morning host Paul Allen, from his days with the Vikings. (As are Sage and Fred Hoiberg).

I feel like from an X and O standpoint, Christensen would be a home run. History of winning in this part of the country against teams we still tangle with regularly. My big concern is recruiting. According to rivals, he recruited mostly Midwest while at mizzou and he has been out of the recruiting game for a while.

We just had big parts of our two biggest recruiting areas, TX and FL, taken out and we need someone who can connect into those areas. I am less concerned with FL, with the Burnhams and Douglas down there.

What about Tommie Robinson at USC for Offensive coordinator. He is the running backs coach and the Passing game coordinator. He could help out in both areas of the offense.

I am really liking a Sage Rosenfels hire. Would be a great idea. No coaching experience, but heck it worked with Hoiberg.

I think I would go after Christensen. He got Missouri to good places. Also, I think you have to hire a good recruiter/QB coach whether that be Sage or someone else.

I wouldnt expect huge improvements next year. Lazard would be a true freshman (if he doesn't redshirt) and Rohach would still be just a sophomore.

Which is another positive to this move. Let these guys learn under new coaches as underclassmen the put them in position to succeed in Rohach's junior season. I'm not suggesting that next year is a throw away, but let's not expect the world right out of the gate.
