OC how about play calling - i have a question if anyone has first hand knowledge of the situation, i would love to know the following:
In the West Virginia game, did Coach Mess call the offensive plays the whole game?
Main reason i asked is i've watched multiple games over and over. In that WVU game in reviewing things like delivery mechanics of Rohach, footwork, footwork of lineman, route running etc. another thing jumped out at me.
In the 2nd half of that game more then anytime this season to my memory, it really seemed to focus on a core set of plays that were very effective. I have long been a huge opponent to running 23 zone reads and 10 WR screens. However in this game i was the opposite. The playcalling during the game seemed to identify a few weaknesses and our coaches really exposed them in the fourth quarter and OT.
Case in point....the 62 yard td to Bundrage, we ran that exact same play, exact formation 4 times in that game. 3 of 4 times it netted a first down and oh yeah one big ol TD.
On critical third down play to Coleman in 4th qtr - his slant was used previously 2 series before on the 3rd and forever which was not converted but very very close. That blitz coverage set the stage for that series later on third down when they came with same side blitz and Coleman crossed the DB's face on the slant and he was left grasping as Coleman crossed the goal line.
This is purely observation, no negative thoughts, but, the teams offensive adjustments really looked different from the playcalling during the year. Would love to know if someone could shed light on that question....Maybe it was Mess in a groove. Maybe it was QB play. Who knows, but, for an ISU fan, that was a game that will live with me through the offseason as what we should be striving for with more consistency - regardless of who the OC is....
