My thought too. I just think it would be nice if he's athletic enough to help out at the strongside end occasionally.

I'm a Chiefs fan obviously, and they typically have a backup DL(in their 3-4) who's a tweener. Too big to be a DE but too small to be a NT, and is their top sub in player at both positions. Durbin could see a role similar to that.

I've read all your pieces and, with all due respect, I'm not sure why you keep doing this.

Keep up the good work AClone! Thank you for your insight.

To rebecacy you are an a-hole. Why even make a comment like that? Some people have little respect for others.

My THEORY is simply that the assistant who made out the list bumped a freshman off to put the senior Durbin on. It doesn't really seem to make sense to list a 270 pound guy as a nose guard.

And he was expected to play end in a 4-3 at Wyoming this season. 6'3" 270 is more the size of a B12 defensive end than tackle. So, what's your point? Like I said, I'm sure we'll see as drill progress.

I suppose that’s fair, since I don’t understand why you’re making that comment. Honestly.

In case it’s a question, I’ll touch upon an answer.

A. Because I’m a writer, and writing even this simply about sports helps with writer’s block. Or fighting through my illness. One of the two.
B. Because I love Cyclone football and basketball.
C. Because I try to understand what is going on with those teams.
D. Because if I write it for my own enjoyment, I might as well share.
E. Because it’s midsummer, and there is little football talk out there.
F. Because some people seem to enjoy it.
G. Because it gives me a chance to pick up additional information that I was unaware of.
H. Because I like CF, and it gives them additional traffic.
I. For the fun of it?
J. Because I didn’t know that I needed a reason to do something simple that I enjoy?

That’s just a few of the reasons, but who ever said that life wasn’t complex? Would you like me to keep going? Or, were you wondering something entirely different? If you're looking for something more profound or precise than this bit of fluff, you should look somewhere else.

Maybe the better question is, why shouldn’t I? Sorry, you did leave me puzzled.

Bravo!

I think you forgot

K. Tired of reading college football magazines that only do the bare minium research for teams like ISU and often have inaccurate or missing information.

I for one do appreciate this because it does add a little discussion before the season starts about our players. I also listened to most of the CW/AA videos by position as well.

Your grades for the DEs and DTs are way too high. The returning guys are part of a group that gave up huge amounts of yards on the ground and didn't get enough pressure on the QB. The back seven is pretty good but the DL is still a weakness for Iowa State.

I like the idea of Durbin being able to step in at DE or D-Tackle. Honestly, 6'2 270 may be a little undersized (not a ton) for our conference, but if he can play 10-20 snaps per game to give Mcdonough and company some rest, that's awesome. And who knows, maybe he's real athletic.

No offense to Patrick Neal, but i like the thought of Durbin playing a tackle more than the role Neal (250 pounds) was forced into last year, even though he was a really tough guy.

I love our D-Line depth. I think a bunch of different guys will see time and keep each other fresh.

I really like the interior DL depth. Just a few thoughts on the players:

McDonough - He's a solid player who can command a double team. He's got a good punch off the line. I think that he is a guy who does better when he doesn't have to play extended snaps.

Laing - Athletic for a big guy. He also does a good job of batting down passes. Not sure how well he holds up in the run game.

Woods - Low center of gravity with some athleticism. Nice rotation player at NG.

Jensen - Seems like an effort guy to me. He won't wow anyone, but he plays hard. An offseason can only help him.

Simon - I think that he's athletic, but he was just a warm body out there last year. After a year to adjust, he should help the rotation.

Pompey - Had tons of hype as a recruit. We don't know if he's 100% healthy or in shape. IMO he has the talent to start, but may be a year or two away and just get a few backup snaps.

Durbin - Definitely undersized for inside play, but I think that his DE experience will serve him nicely rushing the passer.

Like I said, overall depth is great (as good as I can remember at ISU). Talent is another matter. Most of the depth is unproven or developing. The DL was bad against the run last year, and that was WITH Rump manning the middle. There's some nice upside with guys like Pompey and Simon, who saw little or no time last year. Getting Woods and Jensen some snaps will pay off. They're going to have to rotate guys to keep the starters fresh, but the depth should help and will allow guys like Meyers and Cousins to RS and develop before having to fill in the hole left by 4 SRs in the rotation.

The D-Line honestly is what will make or break our defense this year. If Knott and Klein have people on them 5 yards up field because of no push, uh oh. That also leaves Reeves and Watson on an island.

Please apply pressure! They are capable...

Keep it up Aclone.

I don't have to agree with everything you say to be able to enjoy reading about ISU football.

Jake McDonough, Cleyon Laing and Henry Simon are seasoned seniors. Along with the latter, Walter Woods and Brandon Jenson also broke in with invaluable experience last year. McDonough is a really tough guy, Laing the superior athlete. Shane Burnham said the light came on for Laing late last season. CPR has said that Woods can be quite a player, and Jensen drew kudos in the spring for his hard work over the winter. Simon is a good athlete with intensity. This is really good depth, and each player allows all of the others to go all out—or be “All In”.

Questions
McDonough is the tough guy in the middle, can Laing produce make the most of that sheer athleticism? Simon and Woods also have some burst, can they channel it? Is Jensen going to be another McDonough? And does Wyoming transfer Ben Durbin play tackle or end?

Mystery Meat
I don’t expect any of the true freshmen to play—barring disaster—so that leaves me cheerfully waiting to see what Quinton Pompey brings to the table. Big and athletic, he was occupying two blockers late in the Spring game—and getting push.

tentative grade: 8.0-9.0
*Though not as outrageously talented as some other schools, six deep is good, better than Cyclones have seen for a very long time (if ever, before late last season)—and these guys play tough!

I really wish I saw the same things you did. I see Jake McD being a pretty fair player. Laing is pretty ok. After that, it is VERY slim pickings. Woods is 5'10, Simon is just another body.

Be interesting to see how QP and Jensen do.

DT's will need to be leaps and bounds better than last year. Without Rump, can we be?

Here’s something that I’d like to add. A lot of guys see Jake McDonough as a tough guy, and that’s fine. There was one thing that I picked up from this year’s recruiting videos, however. When Shane Burnham was talking about Mitchell Meyers, he was talking about what a phenomenal athlete that he is, vertical jump in the mid-thirties, etc. Both he and CPR referred to this, IIRC. Well, then he compared Meyers to Cleyon Laing, saying that they were both elite athletes. Hmm. Then during the Spring videos (*again, IIRC), he talked about how the light had come on for Cleyon in the middle of the season. Essentially, when he figured out to be mean, not just get by on his athleticism.

As counterpoint, I'll add that Coach Shane really liked Austin Alburtis' athleticism...which turned out to be for naught. Still, put those two interviews together, and it sounds to me as though Cleyon might have a good senior season.

Looks like Pierre Aka is switching to DT per his Twitter.

Bray has to stop letting Shane B. get his grubby hands on his guys!

I'm really curious how that relationship works between Shane, Curtis, Wally, and CPR. It seems a little abnormal to have a DT coach, and a DL/DE coach.

I don't think you will see Durbin rotating between DE and DT. There just isn't enough practice time for him to get work in at both positions. At 270 lbs, he can definitely give us 10-20 very effective snaps a game at DT, he can't play there an entire game or season without wearing down.
