A lot of people assumed DMCs departure was due to the 06 meltdown. I agree with you that a lot of it had to do with ******* away the oportunity of 2005.
It also illustrates that 2005 was a talented team, but not deep, which is what killed the season.
If Dmac had anywhere near the quality depth at RB as we do now, there is ABSOLUTELY no way we lose to Baylor and it probably would have made a difference in the other loses as well. The goal line fumbles (bad call or not) would not have happened with a decent backup behind Hicks. With Stevie hampered most of the season, the offense was exposed and the defense couldn't win every game.
For every recruit that panned out for DMac, there was one or two that completely sucked and a walkon that was forced to play significant minutes.
Couple that with truly horrendous kicking and you have DMac in a nutshell.
I used to be one of those that thought that McCarney was fired based on 2006 alone and we just caught bad break after bad break in 2005.
Yes, we did catch bad break after bad break in 2005 - but a lot of that was self-inflicted. Yes, we did get "screwed" by the refs often in 2005 - but we should have never been in a position where "getting screwed" cost us the game in the first place. Back at the end of 2005 and through 2006 I looked at the 2005 season and thought to myself, "wow, if we could have just caught a break here and there, we could have had a memorable season." Now I think to myself, "wow, if we could have just put teams away once we got up on them instead of playing not to lose once we got any kind of lead, we could have gone 11 and freaking 0 going into the Big 12 Championship game.
Yes, McCarney did get fired due to his horrendous 2006 season - preseason mag predictions I saw had us going 8-4 and competing with Nebraska for the North. We weren't even close to that. Perhaps McCarney could have survived the disaster that was 2006 had he not burned up all of his remaining grace he had after the disappointing ending to 2005. Truthfully, McCarney was lucky he was around for 2005 - if it wasn't for the surprising outcome of 2004, the flameout that was 2002 and the abomination that was 2003 combined with a lousy 2004 probably would have cost him his job then.
