I happen to think Railey A.K.A. Dragon is one of the pieces this team needs baddly. As stated above he plays tough nose defense and is not always looking to score on the offense. The team that played Tuesday had too many want to be Chiefs and too few indians. The few times the team was clicking bench players were in the game. The team will benifit greatly from the retun of the Dragon.

I understand why Godfrey is no longer with the team, but the fact of the matter is we need someone like him off the bench so Booker and Royce can start up front when the Cyclones face Big 12 comeptition.

I've been reading a lot of posters that think Railey should stick in the program and develop as opposed to ISU going the Juco route. In theory I agree with developing young post talent over time but you really have to look at it from a case by case (player by player) point of view.

The bottom line is Paul Shirley was a project big. Paul Shirley is not Jordan Railey and frankily based on what I've seen of Railey last year and this summer I have not been impressed.

I'm not ready to pass judgement on freshman Percy Gibson yet, but if Booker has to come off the bench this year then it is clear the staff doesn't trust any of them with a real role on the team and I can't say I'd be dissapointed if Railey, Gibson, and Sledge all moved on and the Clones went out and got JUCO roleplayers to fill out the bench because we already have the stars (especially next year). Every team needs a Stevie Johnson, Shawn Bankhead, Klay Edwards, etc

It's clear to me that if a player isn't a Mickey D All American we have no room for them at ISU.

It is a luxury not to have to play true freshman if they aren't ready. We haven't been able to do that in awhile. the team doesn't have to be 11 people deep. Playing 9 players which is what I think the rotation will be is plenty deep. The team just needs to gel.

The quotes below are relevant to most teams across the country this time of the year and it sounds eerily similar to our team. They were said by Bill Self after KU's recent loss:

"We’re not going to win a ton of games just by playing ‘take ’em.’ That’s not how we’ve ever done things. The ball has to move. The defense dictates who shoots it. We have to be patient enough to get Thomas (Robinson) a touch where he might have an angle. We just have to be patient,†Self added.

"We’ll get better at moving the ball. Guys ... we’ve been practicing for 3 1/2 weeks."

"We have to become one, and we are not one yet. I don’t know any team in the country that’s one this time of year. I think we can learn from it, and our guys will be better from it. It’s a long season in basketball."

Most teams playing lots of new players struggle this time of year. The key is too work hard and improve. That will determine how the season goes, not what has happened but the players and coaches respond.

I agree with that. However I will say it isn't a luxury to have to see Bubu in the games this year.

My only point is ISU would have been better off in the game against Drake if one of those scholarships went to someone like Terell Parks (from Iowa Central) now at Western Illinois. I've seen Parks at Iowa Central and I watched the Western Illinois game vs. ranked Michigan. Parks is the teams best post player (he made some jumpshots including one three while playing inside most of the game) and he would have been an asset off the bench against Drake. Parks would have been a decent replacement for Godfrey. Alonzo Traylor at Iowa Western is one of several JUCO prospects out there (including Godfrey who I don't expect to be back at ISU) who could be that first big off the bench next year if a scholarship opens up.

why all the raily hate. all these people are trash talking him based on his performance in games last year. he played like 2 min per game last year hardly enough time to get into the flow of anything. i think he is just what this team needs,a big not so flashy player that just wants to get the ball in the hoop.most of these other opinions of him are baseless, i was hopeing to see more of him all last season and i hope he gets more playing time this year.

He wasn't an All-American. Some have through-the-roof expectations right away, without the idea that freshmen can improve over their time in college.

NCAA sanctioned tournaments are not a good place to figure out just how good a player can be, but they sure can tell you some limitations. Railey was very underwhelming in the summer league. I bet SW Minnesota State wouldn't trade Nick Smith (Johnston, IA) for Railey if they could. Coaches make recruiting mistakes, it happens.

Agreed! I don't think he's better than Booker but he's the tallest of our bigs and he has some skills. It's silly to write him off based on his first year; bigs take time to develop. He'll be better than his freshman year, he'll get some minutes (maybe 10 a game?) and he'll help the team. I suspect the naysayers are negative because they think he's not our savior -- and on that we can all agree -- but he'll help.

I'll say he gets 20.

It's obvious already that White, Babb and Allen will play heavy minutes. Who gets the rest, to be determined.

Bill self's opinions on basketball mean nothing:jimlad:

That's actually a sadly common trend. Not sure if it's just high school kids who have never paid attention through a player's full career, or what. I love to watch kids go from flashes of potential to being a really good or even great player.

I've seen it professionally in every job I've had. People expect the new guy to get everything when they walk in the door, because that's exactly how it worked for them, in their little dream world. You see it often with teachers wondering why students don't get something or an assignment or whatever, and they don't understand that you teach them first, then they understand.

It's all too normal, really.

I don't think he even played 20 minutes in the summer league. He needs to work on his conditioning

Yep, and I forget that at times when I'm training people.
