They start you on a manageable amount, then next you know: extra recitals and costumes, dance comps with more paid practices costumes and travel, then invites to regional comps and practices which include hotels and plane tickets' then your dance instructor ends up in jail for tax fraud and then you start all over. We stopped before regional stuff.

My eldest niece started the competition stuff last year. I don't even know if she'll be interested past the summer session. Right now dancing=spinning

Sometimes I feel guilty that I never signed my girls up for dance. I did it when I was young, but was not a good dancer. ;) The oldest had zero interest and even turned it down when a preschool friend offered to do the half-price "bring a friend". We did sign her up for stuff as she was interested--gymnastics (did for a year), tae kwan do, etc. The next one did gymnastics for 4-5years but inherited my extreme inflexibility. The other two have not asked about dance, so I don't bring it up. ;)

Which group are you looking at?

The Tae Kwan Do in town seems pricey. She also hasn't shown interest in that yet.

Robert Thomas Dancenter. I can easily see the prices get worse as you age up in the studio, but they've also been around enough it seems reasonable.

We did tae kwan do through Parks and Rec--they are the same instructors at the ISU club. I have had other friends use Parks and Rec, too.

A lot of my friends have kids that dance for Robert Thomas. Seems like they have a wide range of class offerings.

When I opened my martial arts business years ago, I unknowingly followed a guy who scammed a bunch of potential customers. Apparently, depending on the story, he got people to pay $1800 up front for a business he hadn't opened, and skipped town like Lyle Lanley without opening for a single day.

I had at least 20 people ask me if I was offering a deal like that, some with tears in their eyes. Even sitting in the business location, or seeing a class, or me offering free classes, I never could convince one of those swindled people that I was different.

The guy that followed me in town (after I closed down) was arrested for something similar, but actually conducted classes. I hate that people do that garbage.

The 4yr old just came out and greeted me with a "What up, Butt Nut". I feel like we rock this parenting gig. ;)

I like kids to have the right amount of sass to them. Makes me feel like they are more likely to stand up for themselves.

Good thing I had boys who typically have no interest in dance. I still feel traumatized from dance between the ages of about 3 and 6 until my mom let me stop. My first experience with mean catty girls. They always made fun of my bony knees. My usual not so clever retort was something classy like "better than your big mean ugly butt." And I feel like they dressed us up like toddler whores. Burlesque outfits on toddlers. Hoping it is better now than 50 years ago. Plus I was allergic to the hideous makeup.

I think the "big mean ugly butt" retort is clever.

Evidently, fighter jets were flying circles over our neighborhood yesterday. Rumor has it that it was for the X-Games but I'm not so sure.

Big air show at Flying Cloud this weekend. Was craning my neck on Tuesday watching a couple WWII vintage planes flying overhead while I was supposed to be paying attention to my driving on Hwy 169.

Two of my best friends have kids in dance and cheer. This still goes on. I cringe at some of the makeup I see on their girls. I immediately think of

I'm often thankful my daughter is athletic in sports, but awkward in the grace department.

That's sad society still sexualizes very young children. I am always amazed at what our high school refers to with the ironic name of "drill team." Nothing they wear at school activities vaguely resembles anything permitted by the school dress code. I know a parent who bought over $350 worth of required wonder bras for different outfits for her 14 year old. It's creepy that adult men and teenage boys will all go sit in the front row at halftime of the football game just hoping to see something fall out. Yeah I'm pretty much a prude when it comes to children.

I agree. I don't like hearing that kind of stuff at all.

I obviously wasn't complaining but there was a light bulb moment when I was like "wait we are all just sitting here watching them dance somewhat provocatively (well most dance is intended to be this way) and it's okay but if they did that outside of here how many people would lose their minds". Then teenage Wx went back to just enjoying it.

Yeah thought about that with the school that lost it's **** about grinding at a school dance when they have 14 year olds repeatedly doing pelvic thrusts wearing very little in a school sponsored activity. At least show a little consistency.

I agree. I also can hear the argument, "it's a dance move. It's not with a partner...." Not good reasons.
