Hah! I had an air-cooled .30 cal machine gun mounted on a turret on the front porch the day Jodie (the oldest) started junior high.
Youngest son is a captain in the USMC. He has four daughters. Country song a while back about a dad talking to a prospective date for his daughter...catch line from the song is "I'll just be sittin' here cleaning my gun". We teased him about the song, and his response was "gun collection, hell...I'm parking a tank in the front yard!"

We're done worrying about kids dating/marrying. Now we're just going to sit back and laugh as our kids deal with our 15 granddaughters (and one grandson). Life is good! :D

CWW#2's dad was an ex-Marine who later went to med school and was an Air Force colonel doctor when we meant. So Marine/Doctor/Colonel. He didn't hate me as CWW#2 noted since he spoke to me a little. She said he just ignored guys he didn't like. Did I mention he and his friends were ultra conservative. Boxster was super cool and mostly kept his month shut when invited over to have drinks with them and his retired general buddy. Sips scotch, nods head. Sips scotch again.

A neighbor kid on the bus ruined that one for my daughter a few years ago. She won't watch the movies from the books she hasn't gotten to yet, but she knows that spoiler.

Mine started reading them at the start of summer. She's halfway through Order of the Phoenix now. One of her friends has spoiled a few things for her, but I think she's still in the dark about his death. I decided to re-read them so I could remember the sequence of events in case she wanted to discuss them. Honestly, I needed some lighter reading after some of the books I tackled earlier in the year.

I'm on Deathly Hallows now. I'd forgotten about a lot of things in the story. I'd also forgotten about some of the things I liked and didn't like about her writing style.

And back to the childhood home for more family stress about stuff I want to throw in a dumpster. This is so ******* much fun. Likely to end up disowned by what remains of my family. :(

My wife had to undergo the same thing when her mom died a few years ago. She was in Illinois for a week with her brother, sister and BIL going through their house. There was so much stuff and it was almost like going through a house sized photo album with people not wanting to "throw away memories".

I was mercifully absent and back in KC with our daughter. I would have been hated by everyone if I had been there. I have ridiculously few things in my possession that I would be upset about losing. I grew up with very little and have never attached much value to 'things' outside of the cost that it would take to replace them.

Congrats! Mine is only 10, so I'm having a hard time envisioning anything other than murderous rage for any boy that tries to approach her yet.

Mine is 7. Ditto!
16 year old recently broke up with her boyfriend. I'm not sure if I'm more relieved that they broke up or more nervous about who's next.

I'm lucky - my Mom has been going through a lot of her stuff (Dad died in 2006) and either giving it to family members or trashing it. I think she got in on several struggles like you're having and decided she wasn't going to put us through it. I have hauled quite a bit of stuff home and quietly trashed it myself, didn't want to hurt her feelings.

Also, she has started a notebook where children and grandchildren can list things they want from the house when she's gone. I know, it sounds kinda morbid, but in a strictly pragmatic view it makes sense. There's a few items (mostly her paintings) that have lots of names listed.
