Re: Rashad Vaughn

RE Vaughn, besides just landing a top player being great, it may be extra nice to have said player be a MN recruit. I like the idea of getting a pipeline of top talent from MPS to Ames going. Here's to Pitino the younger keeping MN in the basement.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Fizer. Stinson wasn't close. Marginal top 150 recruit. Brackins was close since he was around a top 20 recruit.

Good call. I was thinking Brackins, but wrote Stinson. Thanks for the correction.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

not trying to rip on brackins at all, but we as cyclones always like to cherry pick the best ranking of a recruit we can find. brackins was only #20 in rivals, and was much lower in other rankings. still a very highly ranked recruit by our standards/history.

I pretty much only use Rivals for both football and basketball. ESPN in basketball usually isn't too bad but I think Rivals is by far the best in both

Re: Rashad Vaughn

No, they're not. Do you have a problem with being literal? If someone believes that a team is one of the top four teams in the country, they'll ******* say "they're one of the top four teams in the country".

Since your big hangup seems to be semantics, why don't tell us how we're all wrong by outlining the differences between "Final Four caliber" and "shot at a Final Four"?

Final Four caliber means a team had a good shot to be in the Final Four regardless of matchups. Hypothetically, if ISU beats OSU, who says they get passed 'Zona? If they get past UA, how do you know they'd beat WSU (who demolished OSU?)

ISU was no more Final Four caliber than Iowa was in a national championship game.

I feel like any fanbase would do this though. And he turned out to be worth the ranking.

You think that's exclusive to just this fan base? Come on.

Who's to say anyone gets past anyone? It's a ****in' single-elimination tournament; nothing is guaranteed.

Put it this way...if Iowa State had made the Final Four, nobody would have said "wow, this team is trash, how did they ever make it here?"; they would have said "yeah, they're the 4th highest-scoring team in the country...they rebound extremely well...they move the ball around...they shoot great...they're balanced with 5 guys averaging in double-digit scoring...their 2nd leading scorer is a bench player who's shooting 47% from behind the arc...they've got guys that can cause some real matchup problems...they're well-coached...they certainly deserve to be here".

That's a Final Four caliber team in my book.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

, saying someone has a team that can get to the final four is not saying they will get there. ISU had a team that had the talent to get to the final four last year as did OSU, Arizona and Gonazaga did as well but just because they didn't make it doesn't mean they weren't final four caliber.

No, they would have said, "Wow, this is the first time a team ranked 276th nationally in scoring defense, and 134th in defensive efficiency, has made the Final Four in... *you fill in the blank*"

I believe there was a stat posted here, and I don't care enough about this argument to look it up, that over 90% of the Final Four teams ranked in the top 50 in defensive efficiency. Iowa State ranked 134 in that category.

The Final Four teams this year?

2 - Louisville
3 - Syracuse
14 - Wichita State
39 - Michigan

So there you go. That's why ISU was not Final Four caliber. The clones scored at will, but defended like a round of 32 team.

They got screwed out of being a Sweet 16 team against a team that "defended well" so I disagree.

It wasn't a "bad bounce" like the banked in Mclemore 3 point buzzer beater, it was a straight up screw job.

This is correct, on any given year there about 6-8 "final four" caliber teams. Obviously they dont always make it, but it means that nobody is suprised or they are expected to be in it
