Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Tuesday

Part of it is the "momentum" that has been building by the "experts" on the internet, but a much bigger part comes from what I have seen as Vaughn has interacted with the UNLV coaching staff and the information that is coming from the insiders on our board. Our insiders like where we are right now and they have proven to be very credible sources in the past.

Oh this should be good. Care to elaborate? I'm guessing no, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Tuesday

I think UNLV will be good next year. I think ISU will be good next year.

If a kid wants to go to a school where they don't have many pieces currently on the team, then so be it. UNLV has unproven talent coming in and ISU has proven talent already here. UNLV is selling Vaughn on what could be and we are selling him on what already is. I would be pumped to have a talent like Vaughn on the team I love. I think the development of players under Hoiberg is greater than that of Rice, but this decision for Vaughn is about a lot more than that.

No...I don't think anything shady has gone down. His handler is obviously important in his life (and Vaughn's parents must approve) and his handler can continue to be in his life if he went to UNLV and not so much at ISU. I think UNLV offers Vaughn the best of all that he is looking for and ISU will come up a little short (despite UNLV coming late to the party). Just my two cents.

Better coach.. Better team.. Better conference.. Outside of friends and the handler I don't think UNLV has anything to offer that ISU can't match or exceed.

Are you asking me to quote the insiders on our board? That is not going to happen. If you want to completely discount what I am saying I am fine with that. We have several guys who have connections at the University and inside the program and other guys that are connected on the AAU circuit. They have earned my trust based on getting alot of calls dead on in the past. If that means nothing to you... that is up to you. It is no skin off my nose.

Just what I thought you'd say. More anonymous reliable sources.

Not anonymous to me. I've met the guys and tailgates and games. Like I said, you are free to take my information and completely discount it. I won't lose any sleep tonight.

I have a question. What job will Kaffey have next year at UNLV?

I agree with your thoughts on the better coach, team and conference (even exposure at ISU is better due to tv). His handler is his mentor and that relationship seems very prominent to him. I am simply trying to turn off my bias and think like a neutral party...and I think UNLV has just as much to offer Vaughn as ISU and he can still be near his mentor that currently coaches him. I believe it was last year that the MWC was the #1 RPI conference in the country heading into the NCAA tourney so I flat out don't see the "best conference" argument.

As far as coaching...I watched the Illinois vs UNLV game this year (the game Vaughn was at) and I saw a head coach cost his team the game with how he handled the last several minutes. I saw a UNLV team get destroyed by CSU. However, Rice appears to be an outstanding recruiter. He also isn't young. Fred Hoiberg is young and only has 3.5 years of coaching experience...imagine how good he will be "with time."

I'm guessing AD. We just had our interim AD made our permanent AD, but I am guessing it was all a rouse to keep the seat warm for Kaffey.

Those are valid points, but also look at it from ISU's perspective. RV has stated numerous times that he has the best relationship with ISU's coaching staff (RV said this was essential to making his decision), we play an NBA style offense (not a bad place to come to if your ultimate goal is to get into the NBA), Fred has also recruited him the longest of all the coaches in the final 5, and when it comes down to media exposure that helps considerably with draft stock XII>>>>MW.

Vaughn seems like a guy to not stray away from challenges hence moving out to Findlay instead of staying home for his senior year. No matter which teams are having a good or bad year in both the XII and MW the average competition level in the XII will always be higher than the MW.

I think people underestimate the relationship Fred has with RV. From what I have seen at least in videos/in person.

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Tuesday

As it stands right now I think Rice is a young coach who is struggling to adjust. If you take the good and the bad and roll it all together I think you have a mediocre coach that is willing to put in the time and the work to get better. Will he get better? I think he will, but only time will tell.

Well, I once heard that if you take the good and take the bad, you take them both and there you have, the facts of life...the facts of life.

I'm reading you as a guy who probably had the hots for Natalie. Seriously, I thought you were leaving?

Tough choice for Vaughn. Go and play an NBA style offense or go play a middle school style offense.

I am not going to sit here and say that Vaughn doesn't have a great relationship with Hoiberg or that Hoiberg hasn't been on him the longest, because I think that anyone who knows anything about Vaughn's recruiting can see that this is the case. I will just point out that Vaughn also has a really good relationship with Todd Simon (was the HC at Findlay and is now on staff at UNLV) and he has formed a really good relationship with Dwayne Morgan as they have played against each other on the AUU circuit over the summer.

Trying to be completely un-biased, but you just have to look at ISU and think that is a near perfect fit mutually. I mean look at what Fred has been able to do with players in 1 year (Ex: Diante Garrett, Royce White, DeAndre Kane, Korie Lucious, etc..) , look at what ISU is returning next year and bringing in.. I don't expect you to know these answers but Cyclone fans will and the most logical choice is ISU and I mean that the most un-biased manor possible.

that number 1 RPI was a fluke, they crapped themselves in the NCAA tournament.

ISU would absolutely be a good fit. No doubt. As I said at the start Hoiberg is a very good coach and Vaughn could definitely learn from him. I also think that Vaughn is a good fit at UNLV and he could have a very good career at UNLV where he learns quite a bit and wins a bunch of games. Stacey Augmon is on staff at UNLV. He played in the NBA for about 15 years and spent 4 years on an NBA staff as a player development coach. I'm not trying to argue, I just am pointing out something that I wouldn't expect someone who isn't a fan of UNLV to know.
