Brief history lesson:
In 2010, the PAC tried to gut the Big 12 by attempting to poach Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Colorado. Fortunately, the deal fell apart when the Pac would not agree to allow Texas to create the Longhorn Network. The only team the PAC was able to successfully poach was Colorado.
Fast forward to a few years ago. Texas and Oklahoma announced they were leaving for the SEC and suddenly the Big 12 was circling the drain. The Big 12 was in crisis mode and they asked the PAC about a possible merger. The PAC's response was **** em, let em drown.
Given all that history, it's laughable that the Big 12 should be concerned about perception. The Big 10 crippled the PAC when they poached USC and UCLA and they did so without blinking an eye. If the Big 12 doesn't finish off the PAC, then we deserve whatever fate awaits us.
