Good all around player. I wonder, does he get more, less, or equal elevation than Niang on his shots from behind the arc?

Ben's Dad is a Fraternity brother of mine. His Dad would love him to be a Cyclone but I think in the end it will be Ben's choice. His sister is a starter on the Kansas St Volleyball Team and was as a Freshman, her recruitment to Iowa State did not go real well and she does have lot's of talent as she has started for the Wildcats since day 1. Hopefully the basketball team treats this recruit better than the volleyball coaches did.

Fun Fact - Marc Carlson was the replacement starter at Center for Loren Meyer the game that Loren sat out after getting hit by the train. Marc started at center at 6 foot 5 inches.

I remember that. We were the only team in the country the next year to return 3 players to average over 20 points each. How crazy is that stat. Loren getting hit by a train killed us.

At 6'9 and 200 lbs I thought he'd a be a string bean in the highlights. He's certainly no heavyweight but he looks a little sturdier than I expected.

We were struggling in conference even before he got hurt. We lacked a PG that year.
At the time of the crash, we had played only 2 conference games and Holloway and Kimbrough were sharing the PG position. Not great that year but not a problem either. ISU was 8-3 and 0-2 in the league before the crash and finished 14-13 and 4-10 having lost many games in the final two minutes of play. We would not have won them all but having the L-Train (great nickname after the crash) would have likely given us 3-4 more wins that season. The biggest issue on that team was not the PG play but the lack of defense played. Johnny's teams always played bad defense (think Hoiberg era but twice as bad on defense) but with a 6'5 post, inside out play created great shooting from our opposition. I believe that team gave up over 80 ppg in conference play.

Marc battled on defense and fought for nearly every rebound but was just outsized by players like Big Country, Oostertag and Scot Pollard.

Had that crash not happened- I am not sure that Gene forces Johnny to retire and thus Tim Floyd does not become the ISU coach in 1995.

Loren Meyer was an absolute stud that season before he almost got himself killed, and played well enough his senior year to be a 1st-round draft pick, although he didn't make much of an impact in the NBA. Maybe one of the more underrated Cyclone greats ever; at least, it seems like his name doesn't get mentioned a whole lot when the lists of great Cyclone basketball players comes up.

Quick fact. Johnny Orr almost took the Baylor job for one year the next year. Can’t quite remember what the cercumstance of the deal was. Think Baylor lost their coach late and were looking for a temp coach for the year.

I always wondered what Loren was thinking that night. School was already called off the next day because of the weather being horrible...and he decides to take a joyride all the way to Des Moines?

I don’t suppose getting hit by a train ever crosses anyone’s mind when they head out for somewhere.
