I'm guessing we've also got more financial obligations than any other time in school history (that construction site directly south of the stadium will serve as a reminder all season long). A 5-7% dip in season tickets sold, even if it's from a landmark high, is nothing to sneeze at.

EIU fans can and do buy ISU season tickets to get into the cyhawk game. A decent amount of drops are likely because its a year without them on the schedule.

But ticket prices are about to shift upward they do not want to charge people for the new end zones what they currently pay on the hills or the bleacher. And only the very ends of the current stadium are low priced.

The drops won't necessarily be the problem if the season is bad the problem will be that they will have to under price a lot of the stadium to keep it filled when they want to raise prices to reflect major construction.

By then, we've demonstrated to coaching candidates that we just don't care if they actually do anything or not. 6 years is more than fair already.

I'm not defending the guy. I'm skeptical. More than skeptical. I was poking fun at his contract. However, he does have three bowl appearances in five years and some of the biggest upsets in school history. And, the three highest season ticket totals on his watch. Letting him go now would drive a lot of coaches away from this job. Does Creighton have a football program?

It could be worse, at least. Some people were wanting to give him a lifetime contract. Reporters were asking Rhoads
about it, and Rhoads seems quite prescient now because he implied he'd probably get fired before he stayed here the rest of his career.

If people keep buying tickets and supporting the program, he's not going to go anywhere. I know people don't want to do that but it could be a necessary evil.

That's been a major problem in Iowa City for all the Ferentz haters the last 5-6 years. Stadium is completely full all year and Iowa's AD has raked in the dough. By then it doesn't matter if they go 6-6 or 10-2.

Unfortunately for ISU that translates to 2-10 or 6-6. :jimlad:

I believe it was the Pittsburgh opening that actually initiated the extension. I think that was a more legitimate opportunity for PR than was Wisconsin.

I think it had to do with the fact that if no big contract and extension was in place Rhoads would be interviewing annually for every p5 job that opened up assuming he was winning at least 5 or 6 games. While they knew he wasn't going to get the Bama job if it opened they also knew there was a good chance he'd be #3 or #4 on a lot of teams wish lists. And if those teams couldn't get their top choices they would likely offer Rhoads the job assuming his buyout was low and he could be had at a decent salary.

The extension was done to keep him off the market from similar mid-level p5 programs. If Rhoads is not happy with the AD and doesn't feel like he has their full support he is probably ready to jump ship at the first p5 offer he gets. The huge extension to Pollard meant that unless Texas got offered to him he was almost certainly staying in Ames and there was no risk of losing him to a similar program on a lateral move because he didn't feel like he had enough support. Thats why he got all those extra years to scare teams away from bringing him in for an interview.

It was never a good idea. Where was he going to go? And if he did, big deal.

Anyway... we are stuck with the guy. I thought that before, but these numbers above only reinforce my opinion that there is nothing JP can do to Rhoads at this point except hang on and hope something changes.

JP put himself in this position, now he has to live with it. As do all of us.

Problem is, I think Rhoads is too stubborn to change anything either, as far as scheme goes. He loves himself a horizontal "cute" finesse offense.

This year reminds me of Gene and firing his top coaches. The next year was the same. Winning five games in two years may be what happens to us again.

On the surface I agree with that statement. But, its no secret its hard to win at ISU. Pollard was chastised for firing Dan "for just 1 bad year" when clearly there was a lot more wrong under the surface. Much like that, its becoming apparent to us that there's much wrong under the surface now, that the rest of the nation doesn't see.

I wish that you would be accurate. Gene fired the coaches in his last year at Iowa State and then he left for Auburn. He never replaced them.

Facts. Learn them.

Ference still doesn't have teams that can beat the blue bloods of that conference consistently. BUt it no longer matters. He is now the perfect coach for them since they rarely see MSU, UM, OSU, and PSU. Plenty of years they will only see one of the 4 and they'll never play more than 2.

All he needs to do is not lose the Cyhawk or any of the easy NC games they schedule, split Nebby and Wiscy, and right there you have a monster season in line with fans expectations. His limitations as a coach aren't that big a deal anymore the schedule got way easier for him every year going forward hes now a consistent a 8-10 win guy instead of 6-8 without doing anything.

You are an idiot. JP did this 1 year. Iowa on the home schedule has had nothing to do with ticket sales since 2010.

There should be an escape clause to these contracts. If ISU goes winless or loses 3 straight FCS, no buyout. It is too easy to do nothing and still make $10,000,000.00.

I think the job is getting more attractive because of attendance and facilities. Any new potential coaches should be able to see ISU is a fan base that is desperate to support a winning program.

This thread will be funny when CPR has a team that busts through the win barrier and has a great year. Not one person was against this extension when it happened. Not one.

May be true, but we still don't have the recruiting base that every school south of the Mason-Dixon line has.

Good reason to not give a coach a 10 year contract after minimal success.

best case would be if Rhoads sees that things just aren't working at Iowa State and takes some coordinator job at a big school or NFL and everyone looks good. He leaves before he's drawn and quartered by fans, the school doesn't have to pay a **** ton of money, etc.

Not happening but that is the best scenario
