Real hero. Can’t imagine spending a week with another guy in a Gemini capsule, on the first crew to orbit the moon and of course Apollo 13.

Sad to hear this. There was an article in the paper a few weeks ago about Apollo 13. It pointed out the movie release was 25 years after the launch and the movie is 30 years old. Yes, the release of the movie is closer in time to the launch than present day.

Behind you
"Apollo 13" is just a classic movie and love that Lovell made an appearance as the Admiral welcoming himself back.

He was 97 and his wife died a few years ago at 94. They had been married 71 years.

Lovell was on another mission that was iconic, Apollo 8. I remember being a little kid glued to the TV when the astronauts read from Genesis circling the moon on Christmas Eve. I remember that as much as Apollo 11 or 13. Also Lovells wife had a lunar mountain named after her. Lovell did as much to define NASA as Armstong and Aldrin.

There is a GREAT documentary on Apollo 11 using nothing but original footage and audio recordings from the NASA archive (no contemporary interviews or narration) save a few animations.

It is almost comical the level of technology (especially computing) the Gemini and Apollo missions had to work with yet they put a man on the moon and never lost a man while in flight.

I'm not an engineer, but the fact it was done with more-or-less analog machines still amazes me.

The men who went up in those tin cans... stone cold badasses.
