So I listened to Bat Out of Hell and Back into Hell tonight.

Good gosh almighty those albums are ridiculous. I love every second of both of them.

They're so big. Loud. Boisterous. Bombastic. And don't apologize for it for a millisecond.

So it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night. Paradise by the dash. Board. Light.

My favorite anecdote to prove this is the #1 end-of-year single for 1969 was...

"Sugar Sugar" by the Archies

That is, a bubblegum pop jingle "played" by a cartoon band.

Not the Beatles. Not the Rolling Stones. Not CCR. No Motown or Sly and the Family Stone. Not Stevie Wonder. No Clapton or Beck or Zeppelin other guitar heroes. Not the Who, not the Doors, I could go on.

The ******* Archies.

Our collective musical taste has always been abhorent.
I take it you weren't a fan of "Yummy, yummy, yummy, I've got love in my tummy" either. What's wrong with you, man!

G&R became a band in 85 and Nirvana 87. I'd call them 80's bands that didn't hit mainstream until the early 90's. Still 80's bands

Appetite was released in 1987 and I would say that it was pretty mainstream. The Use Your Illusions were released in 1991 and although they released singles for years of of them, those were the last meaningful albums by Guns for the vast majority of people.

Now I'm getting it this way..I agree. G&R and Nirvana are 80's bands. A good comparison..ZZ Top got huge in the 80's, but had been around forever. I wouldn't consider them an 80's band. More like the Stones in the 80's. 60's bands that were still cranking out some good music. Something that shouldn't be dismissed about the 80's. A lot of older bands were still putting out music. The decade had about everything in music if you wanted it. 80's-90's were the best time for music in my opinion. The concert scene was way better! Never saw Meatloaf, but I wish I had

GnR is an 80s band. Appetite was a massive album that sold a ton in the 80s. People bought use your illusion because of Appetite.
Nirvana is a 90s band. People bought Bleach in the 90s because of Nevermind. Anybody that claims they bought bleach or were Nirvana fans in the 80s are almost completely full of ****.

Not exactly sure.

I saw GNR open for Aerosmith when I was 16 so that would be 87 or 88. Their album exploded so much that they weren’t opening too long. They came to prominence in the 80s. Nirvana I would put as a 90s.

Although when looking at music, time periods are more relevant. Early 80s was much different than later 80s and 87-93 were kind of a group. Dance and hip hop started coming alive then as hair rock/grunge faded some. Rap in a more current style started coming of age in the mid to later 90s IIRC

I didn't pick a bad week.

"Sugar Sugar" was the end-of-year #1.

"Sugar Sugar" was the weekly #1 from September 20 through October 11.

So yes, *that was the most popular song of 1969.*

That was a year with albums like, oh...

Abbey Road
Let It Bleed
Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin II
In the Court of the Crimson King
Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
Stand!
Space Oddity
Tommy
The Band ("The Brown Album")
Willy and the Poor Boys
Green River
Bayou Country
The Velvet Underground
The Chicago Transit Authority
Then Play On
Blind Faith
Crosby, Stills, and Nash
The Soft Parade

I could go on. Nothing off any of those, though. Nope.

"Sugar Sugar"

My wife has awful taste in music. I'm not even sure she knows who the Rolling Stones are. But when I told her about this little anecdote one time, she sure as **** knew the tune of "Sugar Sugar."

I've always felt like the "Charts" are mostly dictated by teenage girls.

I'm a big Meat Puppets fan so I was listening. Listening to Soundgarden way before Badmotorfinger too

Maybe, but Bleach was released in June of 89. Prior to Nevermimd’s release in Sept 1991 Bleach sold 40,000 copies. 99% of Bleach sales were after Nevermind. They are totally a 90s band.

I was listening to "Love Buzz" way before Bleach was released in 1989. This is interesting. What decade would you consider the Chili Pepper's? They didn't realease a successful album til 91
