Hope he comes back strong - I bought NBA 2k13 just to play as him! I want him to have more than digital success though!

Worst case:

First concern is a typical NBA team will have six players trying out for three open positions for when the season starts. If he continues to have issues and misses camp, he may jeopardize making the team on the opening roster. Then he would have to play with the Energy opr overseas which would be worst to travel with his family. Then he should have stayed at ISU....he needs to make it to camp
No he shouldn't have. Regardless of what happens he has money in his pocket and should be living very comfortably for awhile.

He won't be living too comfortably for long if he never plays a game.

Well, relatively comfortable considering his condition. People living with mental illnesses can have uncommon definitions of what it is to live comfortably. I agree with you that he made the right decision, though.

This is a little discouraging. It's not good for a rookie to miss his first camp. I'm surprised they did not have this worked out by now. The silence on the part of the Rockets is not encouraging either. Hope it all works out for the best. I think he could be a great NBA player.

Well, on the bright side he does seem pretty calm and collected for someone with his issues judging by his quotes in the link.

I'm not quite ready to push the panic button yet, but this is certainly a situation worth monitoring.

This is awful news. This is going to hurt his playing time this year and could affect his entire career

Yes, it could snowball on him. This is a fragile time for any NBA rookie not taken in the first 10 picks.

I feel like Fred was the perfect coach/influence for Royce. It's unlikely that NBA teams will work around his issues in any significant way unless he's better than I think he is.

They have millions of dollars tied up in him. They'll do everything they possibly can. They wouldn't have drafted him if they didn't have plans on dealing with anxiety.

Yes, and no. The Rockets are in rebuilding mode, and if they get the feeling that it's going to be a bad situation long term, they will bail on him. A first round pick in the NBA is not like a 1st rounder in the NFL.

They have 2.8M reasons to work with him these first two years. It isn't like they can just cut him. He's guaranteed a contract.

That's not chump change, but if you start missing camps right out of the gate, especially when you have two other 1st rounders, you better show them you're worth it very quickly if you're going to cause them to work around you.

I think he'll be find either way. The thing I didn't completely understand about Royce when he made his decision is that basketball is only a small part of what defines him. At a minimum he's an incredibly talented person with a $2.8M head start. There aren't many people that get that kind of advantage right out of the gate.

Should have stayed one more year in ames

I've thought this all along. He was so comfortable here. He would have probably increased his value and eased the fears of others by dominating for one more year. Obviously it's always easy to second guess in hindsight and he has to live his life and make his own decisions, so I hope this turns out well for him.

I'm not totally convinced that McHale wasn't involved in the decision for him to get this taken care of before reporting for camp. He seemed to have a pretty good understanding of what they were getting in to when they drafted Royce.

OK, this is a stretch, but maybe he is just trying to draw more attention to the whole anxiety thing. He has already positioned himself as an advocate for the cause. Nothing like a little national press to make sure that his NBA career gets closely connected with his cause.
