I love these apologies. "This is not who I am", as though saying that didn't just very freely roll off your tongue while you know there were microphones around. Like anyone is going to buy "geez, I never use that word, I don't know what got into me that one time I happened to accidentally use it!"
And he also said he was a "man of faith" - lol. Far from it. He should have just said he's a bigot. At least then he'd be telling the truth.

If he wanted to lie, probably tried to say he said flag and the "L" didnt' come out well. Say he drove down and saw flags all over and with the WWI museum (if he was talking about KC) that he felt it was a very patriotic town. Not condoning it, just would have been an easier path to try to lie your way down.
Good point ... he should have said he was talking about his recent visit to Brooklyn IA known as the Community of Flags.

Ok here's what needs to happen: He needs to apologize (he did). And life should go on.

End of story

As a guy who can see this as a slip of the tongue, he needs to be fired or at the very least suspended. I'm not a cancel culture guy, but basic community standards (such as they are) should be recognized.

The way he said it makes me think he uses that word all the time. It wasn’t an accident or slip of the tongue. He’s just sorry he got caught.

Right. What year is it? 1998?Nobody uses that word anymore unless they like using that word.

Except that's not how it should go. Should be be able to find work somewhere else? Sure. Should he be in baseball? No.
Money talks and what advertisers would want him to push their product?

Respectfully, I don't see it as a slip of the tongue. That's not a word someone just uses, similar to the N word, unless they use it fairly often. He said it so casually that it's clearly a part of his vernacular.

He said it at work and deservedly will be fired. But in all seriousness let's make a list of all the people ever that have at no point in their life made an inappropriate comment.

1.

I think that's why so many people backed up Mr. King when AB took a dump on him. (Which was a joke in itself as Old Auggie was about as racist as they came)

PC and real life never really match up well. Often the biggest accusers are the worst offenders.

Ok, now let's make a list of people who have said that at work in a profession where you rely solely on advertising dollars and want to appeal to as many people as possible without significant consequences.

2.

Saying that at work gets most people fired. Saying that at work in front of hundreds of thousands of people that will directly hurt your employer? We are all fired.

That's not for you or me to decide. This is the entertainment industry. If his boss wants to deal with those who are offended by what he said, he should be allowed to. If he decides that Tom isn't worth the backlash, he has reason to fire him.

It's almost like the Collin Kaepernick situation. Or Barta reprimanding Dolphin for saying King Kong on the radio.

You're allowed to be offended, disgusted. But you don't have the right to determine who keeps their job.

To be clear, as I said from the beginning, I think he should apologize. And I think he will get fired.

What a tool. Can't chalk this up to being 15 and ignorant. The fact that this phrase is still in his vernacular says something.

Did queer become a thing that is acceptable to say now? I feel like that is something gay people refer to themselves as but am never sure if I a straight person should use it

I very distinctly remember a time when a local affiliate didn't break for a commercial. Pete said to Eric,"Hey. You gotta pee?"

I'm amazed the guy went back on the air to apologize. He had to know his *** was fired. If I were that guy, I'd just kindly put down the headset, walk out and never been seen again.

He apologized profusely on the air after he was told his mic was hot. He also apologized profusely on social media. Good for him for apologizing and not hiding from what he said. But I have no remorse for him using that term. If his mic wasn't on he would have gone on being the asshat he is. He 100% should be fired.

Would be priceless if he was talking to his boyfriend or male escort...

Other than how it sounded that there was disdain in his voice, I would say this wouldn't be a huge stretch. My brother-in-law uses that term frequently, but he his also gay so it isn't as bothersome to me when it comes from him, but not something I would say.
