Schlabach: ISU heading in wrong direction

Article from ESPN.com rates teams on 5 point scale. Has ISU heading in wrong direction as 2/5 on same level as KU and KSU in Big 12.

5: Consistent winner with potential to be BCS bowl contender every season
4: Potential to join the sport's elite in the near future
3: Recent mediocre results but seems to be building momentum
2: Recent success but seems to be headed in wrong direction
1: Below-average program with little success in past or future"

Overall health report for each BCS team - ESPN

If I were to rate us, I think I would've gone with 3/5, but I'm an optimist.

I would have gone with 3, but whatever, Schlabach works for ESPN so it's unlikely he knows much.

In McCarney's hayday we were a 3. Towards the end of his tenure we dropped to 2. During Chiziks reign of terror we dropped down to 1. I'd say 2 is a fair assesment from a national perspective. So we are moving on up.

We are clearly building momentum. Look what we have done in the past 2 years.
Will we "get over the hump"? Who knows. But we are absolutely building momentum at this point.
I gather some people had **** in their cheerios this morning.

I really don't see "1" as the realistic perspective. Maybe overall historically, but just watching what CPR is building tells me that's not realistic anymore.

I'd say we're headed in the wrong direction at this juncture. We won fewer games last year than the year before and, by most people's predictions, we stand to win even fewer games this year. Two years in a row of declining = headed in the wrong direction. I'm not saying we'll fall short of 5 wins this year, but I'm sure Schlabach thinks we will.
 
To put it in perspective though, the following schools also received a 2:

Boston College
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Maryland
Miami
North Carolina
UCONN
Pitt
Penn State
Arizona
Cal
CU
UCLA
USC
Georgia
Ole Miss
Tennessee

Some pretty big names in there

On a national level, Iowa State isn't moving up.

And to those who say we have momentum, how? Our recruiting class wasn't a huge class or anything. We didn't qualify for a bowl game last year. It's going to be an uphill battle for a bowl game this year.

Ok, well we aren't a 1, but we definitely aren't a 3. I could see a stronger argument for being a 1 than that of a 3 though. Just my opinion.
 
Wow. Some tough critics in here today.
Rhoads beats NU in Lincoln for the first time in 32 years.
Beats Texas in Austin for the first time ever.
Brings in arguably the best recruiting class in anyone's memory.
Wins a bowl game in his first year.
And everyone thinks we are heading in the wrong direction.
Glad Rhoads only answers to Pollard!

Agreed. If you look at where CPR and the program have come from the Chizik disaster the obvious choice is a 3.
 
Any idiot can write an article and come up with some bogus ranking system. I don't like the hawkeyes or jayhawks, so they are -10's. I like the cyclones, so they are a 10. I don't understand how these teams got 2's.

With a few exceptions, these teams are all very good
 
If we had went to a bowl game last year, we would be a solid 3. Going bowling the first two years with a new coach would have really shown something.

His scale needs some work. How can you go from a 2(heading in the wrong direction) to a 3(building momentum) without having something in between for teams that have basically stayed the same?

We are probably a 2.5. You can't argue we are building momentum when we had a worse record last year than Rhoads first year, but we aren't necessarily headed in the wrong direction either because we were very close to another bowl game.

He still has a below .500 career record.
We got CLOBBERED multiple times last season.
Iowa State's best recruiting class means nothing when it comes to national perception. Wins, wins, and wins get you respect.
A win in the Insight Bowl does not garner much respect.
We had a worse record last season than 2 years ago.

Taking off the cardinal and gold shades, yeah, it's fairly easy to see why they think we aren't doing much. How often do you hear of Iowa State in a good fashion on ESPN? Not very often. Probably twice in the last 2 years (Texas and Nebraska). Otherwise, it's us losing to ranked teams left and right.
 
I think the "rating system" is stupid. Using that, it is impossible for a team to be trending the right direction while still having less than mediocre results (however they define mediocre).
