With the talent that CU lost off last year's squad, I thought it might be a long year for Tad Boyle and company. I did not expect them to be winless.

I've asked around about Tad's status, and it seems similar to Fran. As long as he makes the tourney every 4-5 years, people are ok with it. I'm not even sure a winless conference record is enough for them to get rid of him, unless he's just ready to retire anyway.

I don't see how he could possibly get an extra year (barring the NCAA going to five years for everyone). He can't get an extra year of eligibility from the 2020-21 season by "not-counting" it twice (as a covid year and as a juco year). He played four seasons of NCAA ball, and none were the covid year.

I agree. The 5 year clock (4 years of playing in 5 years) stipulation in the memo pretty much rules it out. It’s a total pipe dream

I saw that NAIA transfer's minutes are way down, which I imagine opened up time for Rancik. Your program may be in trouble when you're dipping into the NAIA transfer pool.
I think he was the player of the year lol.. I'd say that's worth a flyer on

Maybe at a mid major. You cannot convince me a P5 program should ever take an NAIA player without another stop in between. Especially expecting him to come in and start. I know he was sought after, but after watching him in 2 games, it’s easy to see why he struggles. It looks like he’s never played against guys his size before and he isn’t exactly fleet of foot.

Before anyone points it out, I understand Stephanie Soares was NAIA before coming to Iowa State, she was also a 5 star recruit and went to the NAIA school because it was a legacy thing.

Rancik would be a nice player to bring in as a transfer when Milan graduates/goes pro. I haven't watched him/Colorado enough to know if his defense would cut it in our program, but his rebounding numbers aren't too impressive. As a freshman he wouldn't be in our rotation.

CU is objectively "bad" from top to bottom.

We went to the game in Boulder since we happened to be visiting family near there already.

Obviously I can't testify to the players' mindset, but my sense of the game was that within the first 5 minutes of playing CU, our team knew CU didn't have what it takes to threaten them. It was a kind of "playing with our food" game. Then naturally we gave up some open 3's and CU got a little warm in the first half. The crowd actually got into it a little. Iowa State had to get serious in the 2nd half to gut that game out.

CU is a scrappy team but easily bottom-third in talent in this conference.

Oh and I had to take this picture. Maybe there is a deeper story behind it (I didn't ask) but as it stands, it's ridiculously funny for a fan of a visiting team.

I live near CU and have season tickets. Obviously having ISU tickets is difficult.

This years CU team is the worst in regards to talent that I've seen in 30 years. 2 of the transfers they got were from NAIA and DII. CU also didn't get a lot of help from Cody Williams leaving after 1 year for the NBA Lottery.

As for the Wall of Honor, you can see the black squares, those are covering up the different players that are being honored. they have been revealing jerseys since the Iowa State game. Last weekend was Jay Humphries, This weekend is Derrek White. They just haven't gotten around to Chauncey yet.

That wall in previous years had Pac 12 stuff on it and had to be redone this season. The Buffs are a little slow getting around to things, but they do sell beer at games, so i can't really be too tough on them.

They have 2 such players from NAIA or D2. I thought that was a very bold strategy for year 1 in the Big 12.
they had 2 guys go to the NBA that could have come back. not sure if they got blindsided by one or both. One was expected to be 1 and done. they also had 3 grad transfers out to schools Louisville, GT, and Syracuse.

I thought this might be something of the backstory, so thank you for filling in. Regardless, in the moment for our game, I was highly amused.

I did notice, and was mildly jealous of the beer sales on the concourse. Lines were not terribly long. All or most of the cans were 24oz. And I found one vending machine or vendor who was selling those giant cans in a couple varieties of craft beer.

Overall the venue seemed not much different from when I attended a game there 30 years ago to watch Fred Hoiberg. That time we got tickets 2 rows behind the Iowa State bench about 2 days before the game.
