SEC Myth - Iowa Nice Guy

I would argue that if Florida wins out their regular season and LSU wins out their regular season. Those 2 teams play in the SEC Championship and Florida wins that both LSU and Florida should be in the Playoff.

The SEC East may not be strong this year but it is still significantly stronger than the Big Ten West.

I would argue that with the small number of non-conference games, and particularly the small number of games between power 5 conference teams, its impossible to adequately compare one conference to another. For that reason, if you truly want to determine the national champion on the field, you should NEVER have 2 teams from the same conference in a 4 team playoff.

And I respect your argument but disagree.

As exhibit one, I give you 2006 Ohio State and Michigan. Many around the country wanted the national championship to be between these two teams, and they both went on to get destroyed in their bowl games. It's just too hard to compare the top teams in different conferences with the limited amount of crossover. It's only going to get worse when everyone goes to 9 conference games. This is what leads to the "echo chamber" effect.

And for my Exhibit I will use the 2011 NC game between Alabama and LSU. Despite these teams not only being in the same conference but the same division, they were far and away the two best teams in college football that year. Okie State despite having 1 loss to us, was not on their level.

im sorry I watched that and gave ia nice guy another tally on the views. Why would we let this guy host an isu event? Anyone wearing an hawk shirt should have nothing to do with cyclone athletics.

He has always represented the entire state of Iowa. So if he wants to get out there when the Hawks are currently the nations media narrative so be it.

Watch how fast Iowa State becomes a media talking point if they knock off Okie this weekend...

Also watch how fast anyone mentions Iowa at all when they lose to Indiana this weekend...

I'm really not sure how you can say the SEC is overrated wearing a iowa shirt... the SEC is light years better than the big 10

My order of preference for emcee of Hilton Madness would be John Walters, C Willy, Jared the Intern, and crazy curly headed perpetual student girl.

Edit: Or fill it to the rafters with the hot cheerleader girl from Texas game as emcee.

We'll never know that definitively.

If we're going to have a playoff, might as well cast as wide a net as possible, and avoid arguments that were already settled, (i.e. Bama/LSU, Mich/OhioSt)

I actually feel bad for people that can't laugh at clips like that. It was funny. Not LOL funny, but it was funny.
Exactly. Some people in this thread need to take off their cardinal and gold glasses for a second and just enjoy it for making fun of the SEC.

The problem with your example is that there is no proof that they were "far and away" the best two teams in college football, other than the same standard applied to Michigan and Ohio State in my example: their only loss before the bowl game was to each other.

In my case, the teams actually played other quality teams. Ohio State lost 41-14 to Florida, and Michigan lost 32-18 to USC.

In your case, we'll never know how a game with a top team from another conference would have turned out. LSU's top out-of-conference competition was to a 10-3 Big East West Virginia team that lost their bowl game to NC State and Alabama's best non-conference win was a 27-11 win @ 9-4 Penn State, who also lost their bowl game to Houston. That hardly sounds like "far and away" the best two teams.

Don't bother with facts. If Curt says they were far and away the best teams, then that's the way it was.

I thought the video was funny. I particularly enjoyed the Vanderbilt comment and the civil war jab.

Having said that, I for one am not buying the "#SECMyth". The SEC almost always has either the best bowl record or has the second best bowl record among power 5 conferences.

2011/12 6 - 3
2012/13 6 - 3
2013/14 7 - 3
2014/15 7 - 5

The eye test also tells me that the SEC is still the undisputed king in college football, though I don't think the Big12 is that far behind. Most of the people saying the SEC is overrated are butthurt B1G fans who are upset that the rest of the country knows their conference sucks at football.
