Secondary vs TT Wideouts

WV (much like us) doesn't run a 3-4 its a nickel/3-4 hybrid that ends up being a 3-3-5, thats not really an issue except for the fact that they have run that same defense since the Rich Rod days so they have recruited guys to specifically play that defense, its part of their system. We are running it out of necessity. There has been a lot of talk about that this week and its not really a good comparison, our "3-4" isn't like theirs.

Correct but it is a different twist to what TT normally sees and requires them to adjust and make different reads. In short, it slows down the mental side of their game. Their offense is predicted on timing, simplicity and quick reads. Screw that up with different looks and you have have a chance. It is not much different than what iowa did to iSu in the second half. Make them think more.
Make them practice for something different for one week and they will not be as crisp.

I agree. they will hang 60 on us like they did last year...oh wait...they only scored 34 points against that horrible defense last year. Ya, I would expect them to hang 45 + this year because our defense has gotten worse.

The defense has played well enough to win all of our games this year. Tucker, Jordan Harris, Wiltz, Levi Peters, & J Jones bring an attitude that we haven't had in awhile. It's the offense that has been letting us down.

Lets just say if we're kicking FGs on 4th and short inside our own 25, it won't matter what our secondary is doing -- we need to put up 40+ to even have a chance. And with Rhoads' lets-try-and-keep-it-close attitude, our defense could be in a for a loooong afternoon.

Need to score 35-45 to win. I f we have to score 45+ to win we most likely lose. Last year's defense held them to 34.

In Kliff Kingsbury's tenure....Texas Tech has scored 35 points or less in every loss but three. The three losses were to Baylor and TCU. In the same time frame, Texas Tech has only won six games scoring 35 points or less with two being 34 points(iSu/KU) and one being 33(UTEP).

In short, unless you are Baylor or TCU, you have a poor chance of winning if you get in a game requiring 35+ points. 35 points is the key.

Isn't Tech going to be missing like 3 of their top receivers for this game? I am sure they have great depth of talent at that position, but that can't hurt our odds.

It is asinine to ASSuME,like jeremy did, that TT will score 45+ points on us when they didn't even score 35 on us last year. Hell...TT has only score 45+ points against iSu ONCE....EVER.

I am not saying TT won't socere 45+ on us but when you factor in recent history and iSu's improvement on defense...it is asinine to claim we won't keep them below 45.

Most people making those claims throw in "bend but don't break" comments or have only looked at TTs output against TCU when TCU had a ton of injuries on an already young defense.

I honestly don't see any way we hold them under 45 points. Our bend but don't break defense just isn't good enough at the don't break part and I think it will get exploited against TTU for the first time of many the remainder of the way. We give receivers too much space, up to 15 yards, and TTUs receivers are fast enough to get past us playing without the bump and run coverage scheme.

Also don't lose sight of the fact that Mahomes has been playing on a gimpy left knee. One big hit and he could lose his mobility or be out all together. When he does scramble, they need to make him pay at the end of the run.

Tribune was nursing injuries most of last year if I remember correctly. As far as the disciplinary stuff goes I can't comment other than he missed 1 of 4 games. Sure he got beat last year, but it hasn't been the case this year. I wonder if our backs are taught to face guard instead of turn for the ball, because they normally don't look back for it on the sidelines. The TD against Iowa with Wiltz wasn't pretty but the throw was perfect. That's how it goes for corners sometimes. I agree that Peavy has looked probably the best out there. Need to find ways to get Coton-Moya more involved with the pass game.

Wiltz got caught looking in the backfield on a double move when he had a safety and LB between him and Beathard. I think Wiltz will be fine as he is learning on the go but he has been beat more than just that TD.

Cotton-Moya simply hasn't been involved because people stay away from him. The last couple of games, they just target Cotton. Floyd being back should cause some balls to be thrown Cotton-Moyas way but there is a reason Cotton-Moya was chosend Big 12 defensive FR of the year last year. Coaches respect him and respect his ability.

While i agree with you that Cotton-Moya is a good talent and good football player i highly doubt Texas Tech TCU Baylor say lets stay away from a kid who does not have one int in 16 games. I think ur right in the fact that cotton was just weaker link. Also when our ru defense was as bad as last year of course safety will lead team in tackles. Anyhoo i want him to make more plays on the ball he is a free safety and is free in passing game to make plays

Yes, you are correct. Starting IR Ian Sadler and WRs Lauderdale and Dylan Cantrell are all injured. If you watched the Baylor game, the best receiver for Tech was a guy with the last name Austin. Literally had no idea who he is. Turns out he's a walk on who had a great game. Kingsbury doesn't want to burn any WR red shirts so you'll probably see another make-shift receiver corps for Tech. That said, if Mahomes' knee has healed I like our chances no matter the receiver corps. Also, I really like that every Tech/ISU game is a struggle and is never settled until the 4th quarter.
