Plenty of high school coaches turn down advancement in college positions. **** Styles was sought after for years in the college scene here in Iowa. Fantastic OL coach. High School coaches arent all chumps.

I had the pleasure of playing football at Newton while he was still coaching OL. Loved that guy.

I remember one time he ripped one of our OL at halftime and had the kid in tears.

Yes for football. Something about a few of the top athletes in the '17 class that were at Cent as frosh aren't there anymore. I know one was Douglas's kid (Who by the way after he left ISU for Pitt I cant find where he is right now) and the other two it was said were now on the south side.
Both schools may have tremendous qualities but I think Ankeny as a town has gone too far to try to keep this from becoming a rivalry when instead they should embrace the rivalry and have fun with it.

I don't know the sophomores very well but know the freshman kids very well. I can understand them leaving if they want playing time next year at the Varsity level. The Hawks return very little so I'm sure they'll be some chances for PT.

As soon as he retired the bottom fell out. Of course Jenkins left at the same time, but I credit Styles more than anyone for those teams.

Just a few head jobs probably. Probably a couple in Eastern IA and just a handful in Central IA. Valley, Waukee, Dowling, Ankeny's. But even then it would have to be a perfect situation and I think this probably was for him. Pay is probably a small step down (Says he made 77k at UNI) but it will be a lot less time spent in the offseason on the road and he is coaching with his son now. I know of several HS coaches who turned down jobs as position coaches at UNI. First of all, it doesn't pay that well for the time put in. Second, No time on the road both during season and out of season

If he wants to be a college head coach in the future he might need this on his resume as well.

99% of the reason he chose to do this is because it allows him to Coach with his son. He is a former Urbandale graduate and will get to Coach against his old high school. He'll also be coaching in one of the toughest districts in the state. He wasn't the only college coach to apply fwiw.

Actually, Urbandale and Ankeny don’t play.

Former Cyclone Ben Barkema is a coach at UNI, but from what I hear Blythe is no longer with them.

Yeah, Blythe went into the medical sales field.

I agree. Jenkins and Styles had the Wishbone and T-formation offense down to perfection. They could have told the defense where the ball was going and still gained 3-4 yards on a power run.

He gets to coach with his oldest son, Nick, and will get to see his grandson and grandkid on the way everyday. Plus he coached high school for a year after leaving (SW) Missouri State as an assistant. I understand the move. I went to high school with Nick and I know he's extremely excited to coach with his dad.

I can't get into details but there is some district realignment taking place starting after next season. Your statement is true for the upcoming year though.

I just moved to Ankeny. People really move so their kids can go to one high-school or another? WTF. I'm happy where I am, and my kids will live with it until they are graduated! Unfortunately, it means I'm going to have to root for a team that has 'Hawks' in the name. At least thier colors are Red & gold!

The new CIML format that will start with Indianola leaving and Waukee opening a 2nd high school. I'm not at liberty of sharing what's been proposed.

Doesn't apply to football. Everything in football is districts. In Central IA, that's based on record the last 8 (I think) years. Basically central and western IA are seeded and Dowling, Valley, SEP, and Ankeny are not in the same districts for last 4 years. May change a little when re-drawn next spring as Waukee may have overtaken Ankeny or SEP with a better record in that last time frame but I'm too lazy to go look it up

A certain HS head coach in the CR area who was recently fired was making $90,000. He had some study hall and counseling duties that basically amounted to no-show jobs.

His pay will be about the same when you consider that he'll earn a salary as a PE teacher for one of the highest paying school districts in the state along with that his coaching contract will probably pay 10k. Money well earned considering he won't have to live life on the recruiting road during the off season. His only job will be to keep kids from moving to the North side like so many have the last couple years.

If pe teachers are getting paid over 60k I chose the wrong career path.

The PE teacher at the elementary school I work at here in Ankeny is making over 60k and I know that for a 100% fact. He has his masters in Physical Education so that helps but his salary is close to 73K.
