I had the exact same experience going from Norelco 3 head to Braun foil shaver and went back to a Norelco. I've known other friends with exact opposite experience. I think it's personal and the way you use it and it's hard to switch between them overnight. There's low-quality and high-quality of either type but I think the two are fundamentally different.

I also use a blade and wet shave about once a week and then electric the rest of the time. No way I could use a blade every day but I feel a blade every once in a while makes the electric more effective.

Old man here. Been using Good News and the cheapest Barbasol out there. Retired, so I only shave every 3 or 4 days or more often if I'm going somewhere where I want to not look like Freddie the Freeloader (there's an OLD pop culture reference for you!).

I really think the key is to make sure the blade/shaver is clean (no hair/gunk) in there and allowed to dry quickly when you're done. Gunk and moisture will cause the blade to rust and that's when you get short life expectancy on the steel blades.

How would you recommend cleaning a Mach 3 blade? I just rinse it off and shake it; perhaps I can get more longevity from it by using something else?

This thread is helpful. I've been thinking about how much I spend on Mach 3 every two months or so. I use Barbasol cream, but the blades are really expensive and only last about 3 to 4 shaves (a week or so for me). What would you all recommend instead for someone with a scruffy, thicker stubble (I'm sure I could grow a nice beard), but with a tendency to get a fair amount of ingrown hairs around the neck line? I am also white with a medium complexion as that may be relevant to suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

To clean my Mach 3 I rinse it off with water and use a washcloth to get most of the water off. Then I rinse it with rubbing alcohol to get rid of any water that is left. They seem to last quite a while for me that way.

I only use feather blades and do one pass with and one pass against the grain. 5 years later I still cut myself but it's not the end of the world.

I also like my Braun electric. It was a little expensive as it has the charging/cleaning base. But it has a "cooling" head which is actually pretty nice. It's the horizontal setup, not the 3 spinners.

It gets almost as close as my old Mach 3 did, and faster and easier.

Basic Braun. Works fine. Tried a norelco once and not as good for me. I think the rotation vs the side-to-side makes a difference depending on what kind of beard growth / hair type you have. It's all down to personal preference.

Have never used a blade, not even once. Started my peach fuzz on hand-me-down grandpas old electric after he died.

I've used both norelco and braun. I've settled on a braun as the Norelco just didn't give me a close enough shave. The past couple of years though, I use a combination of blade and electric. I use the electric around mouth, lower lip and upper lip. Mainly because the hair on my upper lip is something that no matter what I have used causes too much irritation on an every day basis.. I don't know why, but it is impossibly painful to shave every day like I need to, but the electric doesn't bother me there. The opposite is true on the underside of my chin and can't use any electric there without severe irritation. So, then the rest of my face I use the razor. Right now I'm using Cremo cream on the rest of my face. I like it, but have been looking into a better quality cream with a brush and bowl.

I have a Braun I bought years ago. I never liked it, it seemed to take forever to get a shave complete because I couldn't get my neck or the underside of my jaw very smooth. It still works as far as I know.

I have been using Shick Quatro for quite a few years.
I have never used an aftershave in my life and have no idea what it's supposed to do.

I usually just rinse with the full water spray from the hot + cold on at the same time. Turn blade one way, rinse hard, then turn in the other way and rinse hard. [Edit: I completely forgot - i also pop the edge of the shaving end on the counter top to break loose the gunk between rinses. Funny how you don't even think about what you actually DO. Then you write it down and actually forget one step.] You can sorta see the gunk in there usually. If I'm really concerned I have an old toothbrush I use to give some mechanical agitation to break it free sometimes to go with the water spray.

When I'm done, I like to lay the razor on the side (so the shaving surface is axially up and down) to be sure the water runs off.

I honestly don't know if any of this helps or it's just what I've gotten used to doing. Your mileage may vary...

I also had a Braun that I kept in my car when I was still working. For those days when I was running behind schedule and didn't have time at home to shave. I would do a quick run over the face on the drive in to work. I agree, it never was as close as what I got with the Good News, but better than nothing. Same as you, the under chin areas were worst.

How smooth do these electrics get ? I've never tried one but with my facial hair I usually look homeless by 7-8 pm , wouldn't mind trying one once .

Buck knife and barbasol. Because I'm a man and this ain't intramurals.

That's pretty low tech when you could go electric weasel.
