I live in Cedar Rapids and Every Monday afternoon John does an interview on KGYM AM 1600. The broadcasters are slanted toward the Hawks but no too bad for Eastern Iowa.

Anyway, they asked John about the Lanning transfer rumor yesterday. John went on a pretty well verbalized rant about the media asking this question to every athlete that could even remotely be considering it. John went on how it is a shame that kids have to address rumors that have no foundation and both the athletes and the programs deserve more respect than that.

Anyway, I did not do justice to his comments but wanted to give him props for putting etiquette aside for a minute and speaking what is on his mind. I think John is a great ambassador for Iowa State.

He is right it is a stupid question to ask. Even if they are going to transfer they are not going to come out and say it. Why is it a big deal anyway if a kid wants to go someplace else and play so be it.

Do we know who asked the question? My first guess is Randy.

Not a big deal unless you're a hack (hawk) mouthpiece and want to perpetuate bad rumors about ISU players...then you're all about that ****.

How did this question even come about that Lanning might transfer? I don't get how this stuff comes up?

The guy has his best game ever as a Cyclone and NOW he wants to transfer? Lanning is smart enough to know he is not an NFL caliber QB. Sure he might get to play a little more at a smaller school, but at ISU he can play quite a bit and score a ton of TD's. I haven't seen any indication from him that he's not happy to be here. In fact, just the opposite, he seems to love it here.

So how did the media even think to ask this stupid question?

I stream the Sports Animal out of Oklahoma and occasionally they have John on with their Big 12 2 minute drill. As the OP said John is a good ambassador to ISU and is an absolute professional in the business. It's good to hear him and have him on our side.

Lanning and Park seem to be great teammates out there. The chemistry is awesome to see on and off the field.

Way up there
Much like the Naz situation last year, no one who has ever watched Joel play, would ever think he'd transfer. He's not the starting QB but I'm not sure there is a player who looks like they are enjoying this season more than Joel. If he is unhappy with the QB situation, he's one heck of an actor.

Those guys on KGYM pay lip service to ISU but they are total Hok homers. They put ISU content on air, but their questions are always just a skoosh condescending and their compliments always left handed. And they don't really know what's going on at ISU, they just read a few things online and call it show prep.

Meanwhile, they have Mac Macausland on weekly for like 15 minutes to talk basketball, and I have never heard anyone be more wrong about a sport.

I really try to avoid listening, but still will sometimes in the vain hope of good content. Sorry for the rant, kind of escalated quickly.

Agree John is great, and he has got better over the years he has been in the job. I will never stop missing Pete though.

I took one journalism class at ISU. Though it was a very long time ago, the first thing they taught was that 'news' was supposed to be the 'truth'. How sad journalism is today. Today's news is whatever your readers want to hear. The typical news channel is dying. And, sadly, their answer to survival is 'sensationalism' regardless of 'truth'. It's about fabricating controversy to sell advertisement. Of course 'readers' are partly to blame because they thirst for anything that will sustain their egos. But, that's another topic for another day...
