I'd imagine if he agreed in principle, he will have trouble backing out. That is something you don't want following you for your career.

Here are more tweets from Nick Piotrowicz, a Toledo beat reporter:

Toledo confirms officially that "an offer is on the table" for a Matt Campbell contract extension.

Campbell and I spoke at length about ISU in Sept. He really respected Rhoads' work there. Not sure if that hurts or helps ISU's case.

Iowa State is a damn hard job. Not that Campbell is afraid of that, but I'm not sure he's better off there.

If Campbell is hired this year, his buyout is $200,000.

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard and Toledo AD Mike O'Brien are good friends. Interesting if Campbell picks there.
So which pocket are we taking that $200K out of? Front left, or back right?

When have we known Pollard to overpay? Heck, Fred didn't get top of the conference money and he brought us to relevance again and deserved it. If Pollard made an offer that Toledo could match he should be embarrassed. There is now way to say, and just because we want big money guys doesn't mean they are interested, but show the person you want you think they are a Big 12 caliber coach and that you think they should get compensated for it.

It's tough, you don't want to put all your cards on the table. What if we came at him with 2.5 and JP thought it was all we could spend, and he asks for 3? I would hope we put something in the 1.75 range (over a million dollar raise) and then if he asked for more, we put it in incentives for winning. Heck, give him 1.75 with .25/win over 6.

If JP offered $1.5 mil initially he deserves to lose him. That's an insult. I don't care if he makes $500k...its Toledo. $1.5 would be less than Prohm money...like I said that would be bad if true. If reports are true and JP canceled other interviews and Toledo and another school are offering more than JP is screwed...it's either lose major face and lose the guy everyone knew you wanted and have to stick your tail between your legs begging for other coaches to interview or open the checkbook big time.

Edit: again if any of this is true, which we will never know if Campbell is hired.

Where exactly are you reading that the initial offer was $1.5 million?

When Fred got success, Pollard ripped up the old contract and gave him more money.

Toledo can not match our offer which will likely be in the $2 million range plus incentives. Highest salary in the MAC is $800,000 made by PJ Fleck.

Re: It's Official now

chuckle...i was going to put the jimlad after it but figured I didn't need it.

I could be the head coach and he would write that it was a home run hire.

I don't believe that JP would offer a guy making $500k $2m. At $2m no way that Toledo can match.

Fred was not the top paid coach in the conference, but we expect to win conference championships. That's my point. For most coaching jobs I agree with him, but MBB and Football pay the bills and ensure we stay in a P5 conference. this is no time to screw around and low ball people. There is a lot more than wins and losses at stake.

What kind of offense does Campbell run?

From what I've read online, a hybrid of traditional and spread. I've watched a lot of Michigan State games this year. If it's similar to what they run, it's an offense that might be more suited to us and different than what most Big 12 teams are running.

Don't understand why people think you need to mortgage the athletic department to hire a coach. Why does a starting salary have to be in the 2 - 3 mil range. What happened to a fair starting salary and you get compensated for your production and longevity? That's the way it works in most professions.

Most professions aren't fueled by inflated TV money.

As if the economics of the coaching profession are relateable to other professions.

Pay market rate or expect subpar results. It's a choice.

CFB is a boom economy right now, and that's how boom economies work, you overpay for almost everything.
