Sic'Em 365 floated an outside the box idea for us

They were doing a top 5 countdown on landing places for the newly fired head coaches from this season. We end up on the list at number 5, with the suggestion being Paul Chryst from Wisconsin taking over our OC duties

For those who cant listen or watch, the reasoning behind it was that Chryst and Campbell like to run the same kind of offense as each other, both recruit the midwest, and Chryst has run probably the best version of the offense at Wisconsin that we try to do here.

What we think about that? I feel like its pretty unrealistic overall

If he decided he wanted to be an OC again it makes sense (he’s such a Wisconsin guy I can’t see him going to another Big 10 school and may want to stay in the midwest). It’s more likely he’ll find a head coaching job if he wants it or just decide to retire.

Cohesiveness of your staff is an under-rated component of creating any team (not just sports-wise).

If we moved on from Manning and Chryst fit the mold that Campbell wanted and there was a good dynamic for our coaching team with him here then it could work. Lots of worry that it'd be Mangino part 2 though.

I feel like Chryst is a decent coach who can get a job @ like Boston College, Vandy if they'd make a move.

ROTFLMAO!

The only way Manning isn’t our OC is if after a bounce-back ‘23 season—when he has an experienced offense and QB coming back—he takes a HC gig somewhere.
Agreed. I wasn't really speculating that he wouldn't be. And I'd guess a reason for that is partly the cohesiveness he brings to Campbell's coaching group. One might argue that Chryst would be a better coach, but if Manning fits what Campbell wants from his coaching staff, then it'll take a lot more than this season for him to move on from him.

No sure I agree with 365's take. Chryst is an OK coach, but he would make Manning look like Lincoln Riley! Chryst would make a great OC for teams like Iowa or Minn.

Also Chryst background as a position coach is QB's. IMO Wisky has had a history of QB's that are game managers. IMO ISU needs an OC that embraces the RPO that brings creativity and still emphasizes a 50/50 run pass balance.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Chryst ended up at some d2 or 3 job in Wisconsin as a head coach. He's got plenty of money, can still be a head coach without the headaches that come with D1 programs.

I feel like running any type of offense that resembles the crap Wisconsin has been running for 10 years would be a huge step backwards. People are pissed at the play calling now, what do you think would happen if the offense looked like Wisconsins?

Maybe if he had worked under Campbell in the past AND Manning had moved on, otherwise I think a lot of fanatics would be self-medicating until he proved himself;)

This was my first thought too. But also, if CMC is going to be so square peg round round hole on this then we might as well hire the guy who knows how to play 1920s offense the best, even if we shouldn't be playing it at all.

Chryst would definitely solve the shotgun on 4th and short problem we have now. Maybe that alone is worth consideration.

I can see why they floated that idea for us. They would love that!

I'd love to have an experienced guy like Chryst at least come in as a analyst/consultant for either end of the year or bowl/spring practices. Wouldn't necessarily be opposed to it turning into something more but seems the offense could really use some outside prospectives.

We actually ran a QB sneak from under center on a 4th and 1 last Saturday. Shockingly, it worked, even though it looked a bit disjointed. That said, I do think Chryst would be a considerable upgrade from Manning. But as someone posted earlier, I don't think many of us seriously believe CMC will part ways with Manning.

People want to see successful offenses. If it wins people won’t care.
